Hi

I recently rescued 2 guineas, one who has ringworm around the ear. I noticed it and took them to the vet, who confirmed diagnosis and gave me Intrafungol. Only one guinea has this patch. The vet told me only that guinea could be prescribed Intrafungol, the other couldn't be treated unless she showed signs - which makes sense but surely it will be passed on anyway?

I am completely paranoid about the ringworm being passed on to other animals, humans and guineas! So they are sadly not being handled a lot, only when I clean them out and give the ringworm guinea her meds. I have used F10 to wipe down their indoor plastic based cage.

I have Imavarol to bathe them in, but can I bathe them in the sink or an old washing up bowl? Will it need cleaning out with F10 afterwards? When I dry them should I throw the towel out afterwards? help!

You probably need latex gloves when handling the infected one, & possibly a throwaway apron, when you bathe him/her afterwards clean the bowl or sink in F10. I'm frantic when I'm using fresh chicken so everywhere gets bleached. No need to throw the towel away, just wash on a very hot wash. I'm surprised that she didn't say to put the other one in a separate cage, maybe she just thinks they will get it away. The only thing l can think about with the medicine is its ineffective if you use it & they haven't got any symptoms. It's best to keep the cage disinfected.
Just ask the vet should you separate the piggies? Just don't worry.

The intrafungol should be sufficient to kill the spores and cure the problem - you don't need to do the dips in addition. When I have had a piggy with fungal I have only treated the affected piggy with intrafungol and it has not spread to the other piggy. A full deep cage clean with F10 and all bedding washed at 60 degrees should do the trick.
When handling please enforce rigid quarantine - I used a specific apron reserved ONLY for handling the affected piggy and washed hands etc before handling any other piggies. I've managed to contain the situation without any spread at all.

Thanks both for your replies!
Yes, I am using throwaway gloves and aprons when handling.
I will hold off on dips for now then, I don't want to stress them more than necessary.
Should I deep clean the cage with F10 during every clean out?
I did ask the vet about separating, but she thought it would cause them more distress to be separated and honestly I agree..although I don't want to go around in a circle of one infecting the other over and over (not even sure if ringworm works like that!)
