i take piglet to the vet tomorrow afternoon for what i suspect is ringworm (he's had it before), but the other pigs have no sign of it. ive heard countless times about how contagious it is, and i was wondering why piglets only had problems. last time the vet gave extra meds for me to give to roger just in case, so tomorrow I'm gonna write down his and george's weights to see if i can get more again. so do you know why piglet is so susceptible, is it like immune system related? also how long is he considered contagious? I'm gonna write down some q's for the vet tomorrow, but i was wondering if anybody on here had any insight. :{

his last out break was in late march, and the vet prescribed fluconasole (orally). since then we've moved, and they're in a 2x4 C&C cage in our finished basement. i have the cage lined with newspapers, and usally put towels down on top. we change their cage everynight, and spot check as-needed.

how long ago did you move?
How many pigs are in the pen?
After the last outbreak, did you disinfect everything in the cage? - eg food bowls, toys etc.. or throw anything that could not be disinfected? Also did you disinfect all the C+C grids? what do you use for the base of the pen (like alot of people use corex )?

Sorry for the amount of questions!

oh also how long did the treatment last? did you use it for the whole length of time prescribed and did it clear up after the treatment?

it's ok! i dont mind answering them :) we moved down here at the beginning of may, there are 3 pigs in the pen, we didnt have this pen during the last outbreak, and we did disinfect all of the cage accessories. we use coroplast for the cage bottom, but like i said this cage is different than before so we didnt disinfect this one yet. and the treatment lasted 2 weeks, and dispite their dislike of it, we gave it to them the full course and it did clear up the infection.

hmm. Was just wondering because dermatological conditions usually happen when there has been a recent change or stress to the pig (eg moving). The immune system is low and cant fight off the infections which are in the environment which it normally can fight, which was why I was wondering how long ago you moved.
It takes around 2 weeks from infection to showing symptoms for ringworm.

But seeing as you've got a different cage from the previous infection, its unlikely to be reinfection after the move.

Another reason they can get it is if they are living in too small a cage and not cleaned out often enough, but again its not the case here.

But yeh, ringworm is very contagious (also to humans), so defo a good idea to treat the others. And disinfecting everything again.

I'm guessing that if he was immunosuppressed then he'd have other infections not just ringworm (like mite, respiratory infections etc..). Which makes me think that somethings stressed him and decreased the immune response.

idk what would be stressing him, but ill deffo keep in mind. is bleach a sufficient disinfectant for ringworm? thats what i used last time, so i hope it worked...

I should think so. I remember when we had a load of ringwormy pups into a rescue centre I worked in, we used bleach to clean EVERYTHING they went near!

just found the concentrations, for ringworm its 1:10, so one part bleach for ten parts water.

theres a PDF called Bleach Dilution Quick Reference if you google concentration of bleach for disinfection of ringworm. its got some examples of measurements.
