Ringworm - treatment with Daktarin?

Has anyone had success treating ringworm with miconazole or ketoconazole based products?

Have just been reading a little about Daktarin and it states that it treats ringworm. Just wondering if anyone had tried using these creams in the early stages where there's just a small patch of ringworm.
 
The pigs i had from Sophie were bathed in malaseb every 3 days with Daktarin put on the sores twice a day. They cleared up reall well and quickly. Not sure about the Daktarin on it's own though.
 
i have used this and have have a lot of success with it,but i have also found if there is bigger areas/patches of hair loss its far better and easier to use imavrol especially in large groups of guinea pigs as i found in some cases the cream cleared up one patch but then it came in another area... for small patches just coming it works very good...i found after 3 dips of imavrol the ringworm had completely gone,its also alot less time consuming as its a case of dip the guinea (air dry) then 3 days later dip again and then another 3 days dip again after this treatment all the ringworm was gone in all the guineas and a 4th treatment can be given if needed its also a lot cheaper then other medsxx
 
Thanks Vicky - yes, I used a combination of Malaseb baths every few days with daktarin or canasten (or bepanthan, depending on the severity of the sores) twice daily.

For small fungal patches (not necessarily ringworm) I've had success with Daktarin or Canasten by itself, but generally I'd rather be safe than sorry and bath them in the malaseb too.

I also have antifungal spray from the petshop, I'm never really sure what good it does, if any

Hi Laura,

Yes I had success treating ring worm in 4 guinea pigs using Daktarin. I applied this to sores twice daily, and gave them a weekly bath in nizoral shampoo.

The cream took the scabbing away very quickly and hair reappeared within 2-3 days.
 
Thanks for the replies. Sometimes I just get nosy about some things, often completely unrelated to my own pigs, this piqued my interest today. :))
 
Read this with interest as I had to take one of mine to vets Tuesday. He not sure if it's fungal or ringworm (?) So has taken some cultures and is treating with Surolan which I've found out is quite heavy duty where other things could have been used. (Should have come here first really, but chalk it up to experience).
Some posts have mentioned melaseb for bathing - what is it and where do you get it from?
 
Malaseb is prescription only, from vet, but Nizoral (for humans) is also good for fungal. Both are quite drying though - for the pigs and for your hands!

Malaseb is a Prescription-Only shampoo as far as I know, the vets should have it.

From reading others experiences, it looks like a combination of anti-fungal bathing and creams is the most effective treatment. I mainly asked as fungal infection/ringworm often starts out on the face and it may be a struggle to rely on just the bathing to effectively deal with these patches. If it's possible to catch it very early just with Daktarin it would be useful, although it did cross my mind that it can have spread and symptoms not occur for a few days - so just treating areas of hair loss is not necessarily wholly effective.
 
I agree Laura - I think two pronged treatment is needed, as it is fungal and therefore spores spread, so it's not just the visible signs that need to be treated, but the whole pig.

The creams certainly seem to heal specific patches quite effectively, and the baths ensure it doesn't spread to the rest of the pig - that's what I think anyway!

And of course treating the hutch / cage with something like Virkon that kills fungus.

In the past my Vet has also prescribed Surolan for a small localised fungal skin infection (no ringworm). It cleared up super quickly and I was really pleased with it. She did advise that it should be used very sparingly (I believe it contains a steroid or something which can potentially thin the skin) and I was careful not to get it on my hands. To be honest I haven't really heard much mention of Surolan myself, so I'm curious to know what negative effects you've heard of, so I can make an informed decision about whether or not to use it again. Thanks....and I hope your piggy gets better very soon x
 
At the risk of sounding like a broken record (I've mentioned this already on another thread and am very curious!), those of you who have used Daktarin, exactly which of the Daktarin products did you use? i.e. Daktarin Cream, Daktarin Gold (cream) or Daktarin Aktiv (cream)?
