Hi guys

I posted a couple of weeks back, still a newbie to this site but would be great if you could help me out again. After my piggie Bowie died my other one became very withdrawn so we got him a new friend....our little Yogi bear. He is super active and happy but I noticed a little bald patch coming on his face.

We have had him for just about two weeks now...

Is this ringworm? Does he need to be separated? I think I caught it pretty fast as this first pic below was taken on Wednesday and there was no patch.....

I have I wench lotion from Gorgeous Guineas and an anti fungal spray from pets at home....we are going to take him to the vet too but I just wanted some advice from other piggie owners...I'm too impatient to wait lol

Thanks
Elly

It looks like ringworm to me! Please do not use home treat and shop products; they are not strong enough. It would be good if you had your boy seen and diagnosed by a vet. We have made very good experiences with itrafungol oral treatment and imaverol dip when treating ringworm. You will need to dip your companion piggy as well, but they can stay together, especially if they are newly bonded. If your boy is from p@h, you should be able to claim back the vet cost from them if the infection has happened within two weeks' of purchase.

You can find out more in this thread here: https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/ringworm-hygiene-and-pictures.115402/

Thanks for getting back to me so quick. We were taking him to the vet tomorrow regardless, I don't like taking any chances with my boys... it's vets for pets inside a p@h so we will say to them about a refund. I was using the kwench lotion as I thought maybe was helping with the itchiness but I can stop using it if it's of no benefit.

I've been dealing with ringworm for the past few weeks. I strongly recommend you but yourself some F10 handgel which is anti fungal as well as antibacterial. You should use it every time you've handled the piggies or anything in their cage. It will give you peace of mind you're less likely to spread the infection to yourself.

I would also recommend Anigene disinfectant. It's slightly cheaper than F10 too. It is anti fungal and anti bacterial. I bought this as a ready made spray and the concentrate so I can refill. I can recommend sites to get them if that helps.

I'd also add that you should get the dip from the site Helen recommends above. It is the only place you can get this dip licensed for use on small animals. If you try and buy imaverol from any other site, you will need to have a vet prescription to be allowed to buy it for guinea pigs.

Feel free to PM me if you want a bit of moral support - this was the first time I've had to deal with it and support from others on here really helped me.

Thanks so much! I will message tomorrow after the vet visit and let you what they say. I'll have a look on that site now too! How are your pigs doing?

Well the one which had the obvious patch of ringworm (very much like yours and our vet was a vets for pets one although our piggies didn't come from p@h and these two girls we have had since April) is classic recovery currently in the hair growing back from the inside out. So going well.

The other girl (who was treated at the same time with itrafungol meds orally and the imaverol dip) the vet wasn't sure whether she was infected or not but she's definitely still got something Helen was wondering whether maybe mange mites now - I've read that when they are low with one thing they can end up with this so it might be worth you reading up the symptoms for that too so you can keep an eye out.

Thanks for asking - look forward to chatting with you and hope your vet visit goes well.
