hi, I'm quite sure my guinea pig has ringworm, I noticed a circle behind her ear and today I've noticed it's grown, however I got a ring recently, went to the doctor and they've diagnosed me with it so I'm pretty sure I got it off her. Firstly can anyone recommend a good treatement? Secondly could I put this "daktacort hydrocortisone cream" which I was diagnosed, it doesn't say anything like do not put on animals? Thanks

@ashleigh

Hi,
You piggie will need a trip to the vets to get some topical cream/ointment.

Please do not use 'Daktakort' on a piggie it has two active ingredients 1. a steroid cream that is the hydrocortisone cream part of it. and 2. an anti fungal 'miconazole nitrate'

The Miconazole on its own is fine for piggies, but steroid part of Daktacort cream can do more harm than good

Our vet has prescribed Miconazole (Daktarin) for us in the past for one type of fungal infection but there may be better creams out there for ringworm itself

Tagging in our ringworm experts.

We have a ringworm thread here http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/ringworm-hygiene-and-pictures.115402/

Where are you based? We may be able to recommend a cavy savy vet near you.

I agree with Lee, please see a vet for proper diagnosis and treatment. Hygiene is also really important and this is covered in the guide.

My preferred treatment is with oral medication - Itrafungol and/or Imaverol dips (which are not rinsed off). The duration of both the Itrafungol and the frequency of dipping does tend to vary depending which vet you see.

Please can you confirm your location, so we can tailor the products we mention to the correct country.

Hi! How long has she had bald patches and how long have you had them?

You can find our recommendations for the currently most effective products on the ringworm thread. Please have it properly diagnosed by a vet. Imaverol dip you can get from hyperdrug online. Itrafungol is is not cheap, but as systemic fungal it is very effective in clearing up any fungal; it is a prescription medication, you will need to have to go through a vet.

These recommendations are assuming that you are in the UK? Please click on your username on the top bar, then go to personal details and scroll down to location. That way, we can always give you the correct advice for your part of the world straight away. Thanks!

Mine was on intrafungal and surolan ear drops (it's for cats and dogs but my vet gave me it to rub into the infected area of my piggie twice a day!) the surolan will probably give your piggie a bald patch but the fur quickly grows back :) I'm sure surolan is quite cheap too
