This afternoon I found Charlie in his hutch, not moving, breathing heavily and looking pretty awful.
I took him to the emergency vet who said it looked like a diabetic coma - it seems he may have been diabetic for some time, as he has been drinking a lot but gradually losing weight. But as he was eating, moving around and seemed happy, I didn't think anything much of it.
They kept him in to try to bring him round with fluid and glucose, but 5 minutes after I left him he got worse and they put him to sleep (I had given my consent for them to do that if he didn't improve). So by the time I got home, they had already rung and told my husband he was gone
It was awful to see a lovely, lively pet lying there so listless and in distress. He truly was in an awful state and I wasn't too surprised by the eventual outcome, but it seemed only fair to let the vet try to revive him before we made the final decision. I am just glad it was me that found him and not my daughter whose pet he was. She is 7 and has had him since she was 3, and she's upset enough as it is.
So RIP Charlie, I hope you are happy in animal heaven.
