RIP Charlotte and Holly, my baby piggies

Walked into the pig room to feed the pigs and found Holly and Charlotte, the two youngest pigs, dead. I don’t even know what happened.
Holly was only a year old and Charlotte was turning three. They had their whole lives ahead of them, and now they’re gone. I feel like it’s all my fault. I don’t know what happened to them or why they died.
Sylvia and Harriet are still alive and well which is good, but I’m terrified that I’m going to lose them too.
Charlotte is the brown one, Holly is the black one with the brown stripe.

I am so very sorry. What horrible, horrible shock for you!

We can of course not tell you what has happened, as much as you are craving answers that help you make sense of what has just happened. Finding our piggies dead upon coming home is all our worst nightmare.

It is much more likely an environmental factor since food poisoning doesn't work that quickly and neither does any infectious illness. Please check the monoxide/gas levels in your home, especially at this time of year. Guinea pigs are more sensitive to it than humans.

The other cause could be a sudden massive fright but that is much rarer in indoors guinea pigs than in those in hutches, exposed to weather extremes, predators, fireworks etc.

But rest assured that it is not down to you being a bad or uncaring owner; it is just one of these freak things that you never anticipate and therefore cannot prevent.
