Junior Guinea Pig
This tribute to my lovely Ace is way over due! Ace was adopted from a member of this forum, Danielle (dan2sl) in September 2009 along with her cagemate, Liddell (Liddie).
This is my favourite picture of her which Danielle took and had posted on to the forum. I saw her rehoming post and it was this picture that ‘persuaded’ me to offer her two girls a home.
It was during Christmas 2010 when I was giving Ace a bath that to my horror I discovered a large abscess on the top of her hind leg. Feeling sick with fear I got a vets appointment that day. After trying to lance it, the decision was made to return her the next day for surgery.
Midday New Year’s Eve – I handed you over at the vets not knowing in a few hours time I would be left devastated. They said you should be ready to collect by 5pm and they’d call me at 4.
The phone rang at 3.30pm and I saw on the caller display that it was the vets and I felt a chill go through me. It was too soon. Something was wrong. The vet said that the surgery to remove the abscess had been a success, however whilst you were in recovery, you were doing really well and had started to come round but then suddenly stopped breathing and passed away.
I started to cry and could barely speak to the vet.
It was the saddest trip I’ve ever had to make to collect your body. I don’t know how I held it together in the vets with the receptionist being so sweet and having to pay a £210 bill to collect your poor body. It feels just like yesterday – as I type I can still strongly feel all those emotions coming back with the tears.
When I got you home I couldn’t believe you weren’t alive. You looked as though you were sleeping and you were still warm. Where was the rigor mortis? And for a crazy half hour I thought you were still with me and I waited for you to wake up – just standing over you and sobbing.
Ace was a fabulous huge piggie with a beautiful glossy coat. She was the alpha female. I used to pick her up for a cuddle and she’d try to hide her face in my hair. I’d hear her breathing as her face was so close to my ear.
She loved her food and would always be at the front of her cage with Liddie, looking for treats.
This was her cage mate Liddie
I know what caused your abscess but I’ve no idea which piggie bit you. It would have happened during floor time. I’m so sorry Ace, you would have been 4 in February and you left far too soon.
3 weeks ago you called to Liddie to join you at Rainbow Bridge and I had to let her go. Now you both run and play together as though you’d never been apart.
Love and miss you big chunky girl x
