Poppy was losing weight. I weighted her yesterday to find that she was 2/3 of her normal weight and her teeth were wonky she we booked her into the vets. Unfortunately, I found her very dead-like a couple of hours ago and rusted her to the vet. She had tumors in her neck, poor girl! She was almost unconscious and was passing away by the time she got there and was unlikely to recover. She was fine this morning- I don't understand! I feel like such a bad person. I've basically just lost a piece of my heart. I remember recusing her from my friend who almost neglected her. I feel in love with her and her previous partner and I upgraded their accommodation and everything. She's loved her double run and all.

Hopefully she's had a good 6 years. 3 of them with me. 1 and a half of them with Billie. I hope I did everything I could for her to be happy.

Rest in peace, Poppy. :'(

So sorry for the loss of Poppy. It sounds like nothing could have been done for her, please do not beat yourself up. She was obviously very loved and cherished. *hugs*

RIP Poppy

I am so sorry for your loss. You must not blame yourself as you did all you could have to help her.

so sorry to hear you lost poppy. tumours are such horrible things, they appear and take over so quickly. don't be too hard on yourself. grief will make you question everything, but you loved her, you cared for her, and you took her in when you noticed something was wrong. sadly sometimes nothing can be done. hugs x

So sorry to hear about poppy. Hey just remember she had a wonderful 3 years with you and that there was nothing more you could of done for her xx

I am very sorry that you have lost your precious girl! You have certainly given Poppy a happy life and she has lived to a very good age!

Sadly, illnesses can take over very quickly, even more so in the very young and old. Guinea pigs are prey animals, so they are extremely good at hiding any problems for as long as possible. Please weigh your piggies once weekly. Weight loss is often the first indicator that something is not right, and sometimes (not always), it can make the difference between life and death. I don't think that it would have changed anything for Poppy, sadly. :(

Thanks everyone!

I'll totally keep an eye out for the weighing your piggie weekly. :) The only thing is, Billie has been a bit chubby ever since I've had him despite the large areas he's allowed access to daily. :/ Here's a picture of him. I do you think that I should try to slim him down before I bond him with another partner? What do you think I should do?

The key to a happy piggy bond is mutual liking and character compatibility. I would not put him on a diet when he is already stressed out. Some boars are quite big. All my neutered boars are just have to look at a calorie to put on weight compared to their wives...

Poor boy! Hopefully, you can find him a new friend again. Piggies don't grieve any less deeply, but they have to get on with the business of survival sooner than us humans.
