Heyy,

What do you guys know about roan and lethal guinea pigs.

I have been reading up on them the last couple days and i have a feeling the father of the babies i have just had (tess's babies) is a roan and so are the 2 pigs that made it.

The 2 that didn't make it, 1 was brown like her and the other was all white and i it sounds the same as a lethal guinea pig as they die straight after birth which this one did.

I have googled roan guinea pig and it is a spitting imagine of the dad of our babies.

Here are some pic, let me know what you think?

Either way i love are new memebers of the family Patch and Frazzle!

It's possible, especially if one or both parents looked like roans or dalmations (both carry the gene that can lead to "lethals" ).

Not all lethals die after birth. The majority do have such severe genetic problems that they don't survive for long, but some can lead lives almost as long as healthy guineas, with the right specialist care and treatment to help them deal with any medical problems.

Fairy is quite a famous lethal piggie, she's just turned 1. :)

Heyy,

Thanks for the link thats a really cute site!

I think the 2 babies are roans and the dad...

Got the Dad from Pets at home which is worrying.

Ah well i love them to pieces!

I don't mean to sound out of turn here but maybe this was something that should have been researched before the pigs were allowed to breed?

Maybe so... But i would not have thought these would have been sold from a shop such as pets at home.

Either way i have 2 happy bouncing babie pig and i am happy, i was just wondering if anyone had any info or past experience with thing like this...

Unless you want more babies you should separate Patch and Frazzle now!

Cute babies :))

They arn't old enough to be away from their mum yet.

I think they are both girls but its hard to tell yet, hopefully they are so they can stay with her.x

please will someone explain to me what a roan lethal pig is.

the reason i am asking is because is roan a colour? if so i think craig is a roan colour? sorry for sounding thick anyone. please will someone enlighten me or i will be worrying about craig. xx

First off, ROANS/DALMATIANS and LETHALS are very different! A guinea pig can be roaned or dalmatian in colour and this does NOT make them lethal guinea pigs. LOTS of members on here have roan and dalmatian piggies. They are perfectly healthy. There is no reason to worry if your piggy is a roan or dalmatian.

Roans and dalmatians have a certain gene. When bred with a non-roan or non-dal guinea pig, the certain gene causes no problems whatsoever. Problems do occur however when a dalmatian is mated to a dalmatian, a roan is mated to a dalmatian or a roan is mated to a roan. The offspring of these guinea pigs can be born with health problems and deformities which range from mild to life-threatening and often fatal. Sadly when backyard breeding or accidental pregnancies happen and people aren't aware of this, lethal babies do tend to be born. I'd say 9 out of 10 live very short lives which involve a lot of suffering and pain. It's a very very sad situation.

How old and what sexes are your guinea pigs? Mum and dad shouldn't be allowed together as mum will become pregnant again and male guinea pigs need to be removed at 3 weeks old.

You have no need to worry :) as Tracy says, it's the combination of roan/roan, roan/dalmation or dalmation/dalmation breeding that causes genetic issues with the babies. If Craig is roan, it doesn't mean he was born from this combination of parents. My lilac pig was born to an agouti father and tort mother.
