My sons hamster was PTS today, we knew he had bloat but we couldn't clear it, his organs had began to shut down. We become attached to him, beautiful hamster.
We looked after him, as my son showed no interest. We could understand if my son was young but he is 26. He would love a gecko now over my dead body.

You do right, if he can't be bothered to look after a hamster then he doesn't deserve pets. My parents were the same with my sister after she got bored of her rabbit.

And definitely stand by your guns, if an adult can't be bothered to care for a relatively easy pet who only lives a few years, they certainly can't look after an animal that's going to go a decade and needs specialist treatment.
