Just a quick update on Rocket ( sorry I haven't been on much, missing my princess so much) and his head. If you remember he developed an abscess on his head ( around the time his ear infection was finally starting to clear mallethead) which Vicki drained under GA and left a hole to be flushed with Hibiscrub for as long as it stayed open.
Of course with Rocket scratching his head it's stayed open for sometime but despite the flushing and AB's ( 2 weeks of septrin and 6 weeks of zithro max) and fortnightly vets visits it was still producing a fair amount of pus.
Anyway, was wondering if there was anything we could try before going down the "more surgery" route. I know honey is anti bacterial and manuka particularly good but I also know that you have to use the right stuff for optimum results so did a bit of research. Managed to get a pot of UMF 20+ ( this is the grade that have been used in clinical trials apparently) for under £35 from the health shop ( I know it's a lot more than the usual manuka active but still cheaper than what you can find online and 8 weeks of ABs!) and started applying a twice daily blob to his head hole as well as giving him a small oral supplement for a few days ( Piggy Potions says it's okay for a short time, I did check).
His head produced noticeably less pus within 24 hours and after a couple of weeks nothing comes out when it's massaged, there's just a bit of scabby pus which would probably harden and heal if he stopped scratching it off and refreshing the hole! Went to see Vicki with him today and she's really pleased with how it's looking and feeling and said to continue with the honey dressing. Will keep you posted. x

Forgot to add, Vicki had a good look at his ears too. There's a bit of wax, but not a huge amount. She thinks he may be one of those piggies whose prone to ear infections and so we'll need to keep a look out for the signs of any infection so that we can nip them in the bud as quickly as possible.

Took Mouse along to keep Rocket company. Vicki wanted to know how the rest of the clan were 8... 8... 8...

Well at least something is working. Poor little man. I did not realise he was still poorly.

Yes although thankfully it's clearing up now and hasn't really been bothering him too much as far as I can tell, I'm going on the constant stuffing of his face, racing around and popcorning etc as evidence of this. ;)

Excellent news ..... and you can use the rest of this very expensive honey on your toast :))

Ha! I have warned hubby that if I catch him putting it on his toast there will be consequences! pow-pow
He's to stick with the normal active manuka. Our special piggie pot is for poorly piglets and hoomans with sore throats. ;)

Glad that things are moving in the right direction! All the best for Rocky! If possible, I always take a "paw holder" with one of my ill piggies for company.
