hello there folks, my name is joanne and I'm ergently looking for a rodentolgist in or near Devon. i have a piggie with over grown back teeth I'm sure of it. He has rapidly lost weight over the past few days, and now onlytaking tiny pieaces of food, he seems to be looking generaly misable about life.but i woud rather see a perfessional who can help my piggie without putting him under like the vets do so sort his teeth ideally. can any one help me, any advice or information would be very much appreciated.
thank you

Welcome to the forum, I am very sorry to hear your piggie is so poorly at the moment.

Have you tried ringing Vedra? You can give her a call on 07721 026401 - she can advise on the nearest rodentologist to you.

i have seen her number everywhere, like books and over the internet, i have texted her earlier, explaining my situation.
Feeling guity for not finding a rodentolgist before i need one.
I'm very very new to this site, still working out how it all works.
Its very strange i used to help my mum breed and show guineas, but had to give it all up when it came to do my exams, now i have 7 pet guinea. I only ever get health problems with one of them, its constant, but i read yesturday it could be genetic. thank you for replying so quickly.

You might like to try ringing, the situation could be seen as more urgent since he is not eating. Sometimes it takes a while for Vedra to reply, calls tend to be more emergency requests while texts are not usually as urgent. Are you syringe-feeding him? Its also worth weighing him daily while he is ill, so you can track his weight loss. If he is losing weight, he'll need more food in him. It is harder to help a pig gain weight than it is to prevent too much loss.

Don't fret about not finding someone sooner, the point is that you are now and you are actively seeking help for your piggie. You'll know to be more prepared next time.

Genetic problems do seem to hit some piggies, most of the time medical troubles are just rotten luck, but if it is one pig with problem after problem, he is probably more susceptible than an 'average' piggie.

i shall deffently try calling Verda for some advice.
He is eating at the moment but taking his time and nibbleing tiny bits, for example last night i brought up 10 strawberry tops and give him 5 and his brother 5 ( they live together roaming free in my bedroom. keep them on paper and hay, which i change every other day) and his brother ate all of his in seconds but stripe was struggleing on one.i let him have first go at the meals yesturday whilst keeping his brother away. letting stripe eat all he can before his brother finished up. i can tell his brother is eating what he isnt, as one gain and other is losing weight.
i havent yet syarted syringe feeding as he is still ammpenting to eat but i shall start today, it will help top him up. He was at the vet 2 weeks back and the vet said he could tell stripe was well fed, he and his brother are normally hugh longhaird rexes with a massive apperite.
I will start weighting him daily aswell. thank you for your time. i truely appreciate it.

Any news on your piggie today, did you manage to find a rodentologist who can help?

I did send * a message, yesterday i think it was. year stripe seems to be alittle better, but not alot. I'm still trying to figure out what is up with him. i trimmed his front teeth which has seemed to helped him take bigger bites, but still his stool isnt right, he is still being syringe fed as he still feels to be losing weight.
Verda is sending me info on becoming a rodentologist for myself. Verda was fab, gave stripe a fell MOT as it were. i have posted another about stripe in hope of more information and advice, if you could take a look and let me know what * think i would be truely greatful. thank you for your concern. its really starting to concern me whats going on with him... something to do with his intestines i think now, but cant be sure. looks like ANOTHER tip to the vets for stripeus. poor . i hope he gets better, i cant imagion not having his cheeky self not here, as he lives in my bedroom, roaming free with his brother. I'm doing all i can in regards to getting advice and reading information,so when it comes to the vets i have a good knowledge of what it maybe by the symptoms.
all the best, and piggie hugs.
