Hi,

This is my first time posting, so I hope I've placed this thread correctly, apologies if I haven't!

I've just noticed a small round patch of dry skin in the normal bald area around my five month old female guinea pig Ozzy's nipple area (actual nipple is fine) during a routine health check at home. It wasn't there a few days ago. I've posted some photos to see if anyone has any ideas? There are no signs of any other problems of any kind with her or her two sisters. She's a white crested tri colour American, her sisters are a tri coloured American and a tri coloured Teddy, who possibly has a little Texel in her. They are both ok. They are indoor piggies who were on towels and fleece in their 2m x 3m run with access to their cage which had wood shavings. We've just switched to Guineadad fleece liners two days ago. Run, cage and liners are spot cleaned once or twice daily, towels and fleece were washed daily, Guineadad liners are washed every two days currently to increase absorption with the new fleece, spot cleaned twice daily.

They eat meadow hay, Burgess Excel pellets and fresh veggies, plus fresh (tap) water. All bowls and bottles are cleaned daily with Johnson's green spray.

Ozzy is nearing the end of her heat for this fortnight. She's eating, grooming etc normally. I've booked her an appointment at Vets for Pets for tomorrow afternoon just to check.

Thank you for any advice or reassurance, this is the first thing we've had out of the ordinary and I'm a first time guinea pig mum! (we've had them for 10 weeks). They are well bonded and used to us, they are played with daily.

I'm not sure why it says new born pup underneath the username, I didn't type that! She's five months old.

Welcome to strange world of forums...

Good that you have booked an appointment. At this stage it is very hard to tell whether a scab has come off or whether it is the very start of a skin condition.

Thank you for the replies. Hoping it's not ringworm, how do they pick that up if everything is cleaned regularly? Hoping the vet will be able to help. Does anyone know if it's really expensive if skin scrapes etc have to be done? Looking for guinea pig insurance but most companies don't seem to cover them.

I doubt that it is but invisibly tiny ringworm spores are not killed by normal antibacterial disinfectants and can stay live for up to 2 years. There are now also suspicions that ringworm spores could stay in the skin of a previously affected or even exposed piggy.
