Hey everyone,

Due to blackberry rescue not having any females in currently, I am going to go to the RSPCA and see if they have any suitable friends for my girls.

Does anyone knowhow long the process usually takes?

We are looking to get a girl asap because Tallulah might (if my vet really doesnt think hormonal injections are the best option) be being spayed soon - and if she doesnt recover (god forbid!) I really need a pig to be in a settled with Gypsey whose blinde and needs a 'guide pig'.

I wont go down the breeder route ever, but do need to adopt soonish!

If you can get a piggy from the local RSPCA, it can be fairly straight forward. It mainly depends on how quickly you can set up a home check and how quickly the rehoming officer can process the paper work.

Best of luck with finding a suitable girl!

We have phoned them and left a message but also phoned two other local rescues, one will let us come over tomorrow evening but my mum cant drive in the dark and evenings are best for them.

So we are going to call one in Suffolk now !

Thank you. We did look at that list.

We are now going to Tallulahs breeder but to take on one of their ex-breeders they want to rehome to a retirement home...I think thats a rescue right? I hope so!

The one in Suffolk was Gypseys breeder but she wanted money for the older ones and shes not a nice breeder at all so didnt feel comfy exchanging money for a pig from her as she would see it as a sale - if that makes sense.

Hope I'm doing right thing? We are going this afternoon...

Look - every guinea pig needs a good home; and there are not that many people willing to take on older piggies. There is no "right" or "wrong" in my view.
At least two of my tribe are breeder's stock that have been dumped into rescue, so I am not one to cast stones.

Make sure that she is sociable and not too dominant, so she will fit in better.

Thanks. She only has the one girl and she said she is in with an even older girl and two younger females and apparently isnt boss - which is ideal as Tallulah would need to be boss to be happy.

Sounds good! :)):)):))

You want to rehome a piggy that fits into your group - adding a third piggy to a group of two is the most difficult introduction.

I have collected tips about introductions:
http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=38562

With Fflur, who had been bullied at the rescue, it helped that I kept her near the others for a day or two, so they could meet from a safe distance first. It enabled me to pick the "right" time for introductions. It also helped me to gauge the reaction from the tribe.

Cozmo - it was the one in Braintree :)

We got the girl that the breeder had. She said that she has had two litters, she has had a total of 4 babies, 2 each time. However although she coped fine the first time, the second time she lost some weight so she decided that was her last, and shes been with the breeder since (year and abit I think). She also said the only time she has been alone was when her cage mate was rehomed and she had to wait a week for another cage mate, and she lost some weight then too.

We have her here now and we decided qurantine wasn't necessary since it obviously stressed her before being on her own, also I know this certain breeders pigs are kept very well and their health constantly checked etc. Not that I would usually recommend not qurantining of course (we had the spare cage set up if we went to the other 'breeder').

We introduced them in the bath with towels and Tallulah is being the dominate one but thats fine. Now they are in the big cage she is just sitting in the box of hay not moving...

I am hoping she will come out tonight for food/water etc. Although not sure what to do about veggie time, as I dont think she would have been fed the same stuff as my girls get?

ETA: She is named Montana, ginger and white and a sheltie (3.5 years old). This pics from the breeders website...

Thats where our girl is coming from tomorrow the Braintree one.

Glad you got your lil girl! She's gorgeous!

For veggies I would just feed them both something like cabbage/carrot, which is likely your new little one would have had, and introduce other stuff gradually. Your own one won't suffer for a short while on more 'ordinary' veggies. Maybe some pepper for vit. c. Lovely photo. xx

Aww- she is gorgeous! Has she got a name yet?

Just introduce veg slowly - if she has never had them, she'll be a bit erratic at first, but at the rate she is settling in, she'll copy the others. Give her time to get her bearings and put food close to where she can get it with a quick dive until she is ready to come out and join her new mates.

Her name from the breeder is Montana :).
She is very erratic at the moment, she just wacked into the hay box because I went to check her. Does seem weird because all my pigs are so tame, but I know this is normal pig behaviour.
She might feel lonely because the breeder kept her in a hutch that would be able to the size of 2x4 with about 3-4 other pigs (2 babies) and now she is in a 11x4 with just two pigs.

Give her time to get her bearing, and she will come out of her shell eventually. Montana is a lovely name and such a stunning girl!

My two coronets who came into rescue from a breeder are still fairly nervous and Cariad is still extremely shy - they have quite clearly not been petted much, just "serviced".

the company of other piggies should help Montana find her feet sooner than otherwise!

Hopefully!
I know Sharon the breeder does handle them quite alot, as they all seemed tame enough there, its just here she has gone into her shell which is totally understandable! I'm just not use to it.
They are fed at half seven usually so hopefully she will come out for that, after a while anyway once she thinks we arent looking ;)

Montana is beautiful, I am glad you found a good addition for your herd. :)

She's so pretty! I absolutely adore her x)x). Congrats to you!

She's very beautiful x)

Even really tame and well handled piggies can get very upset and frantic when they move to a new environment - give her a few days and I'm sure she'll start to settle :)

Thanks, lets hope Pickles and the gang settle well too!

Thanks everyone, will pass the compliments onto Montana! She has eaten abit of cucumber and carrot, but not ventured out the hay boxes just yet. Which is okay to be honest because atleast she can munch on the hay when she wants, and the cucumber should give her abit of hydration.

I added some of her mix into the girls pellets, but Tallulah and Gypsey just nom it up as soon as its added because I guess it takes nicer.
