RSPCA turning unwanted pets away..

In the video Beverley Cuddy, Editor of Dogs today said "Every charity is suffering at the moment, it's a recession. People have got less money to give. So for a big charity that's got millions in reserve to close its doors and to send people down the road to tiny charities, that are already struggling. Its a huge dereliction of duty."

She has got it spot on.

I just want to say, that I'm truely pleased many people i know are aware of this- that the rspca donations do not go towards what we think they do! and these people are not involved in animal rights the way we are. The message is spreading.

Our local branch of the RSPCA in Walsall do a fantastic job. It is solely run by volunteers such as x-vic-x and becky86 who post on here. They both do a fantastic job for little recognition and devote much of their spare time to caring for animals and fund raising. As far as i am aware they recieve no funding from the head office and rely on donations made to the Walsall branch specificaly. Without them I dread to think how many piggies and Bunnies would be left neglected without hope of finding homes. I do worry when I see posts such as this as without my local branch piggies such as Megan who was rescued from awful conditions wouldn't have a chance in life.

From what I've heard before. If you do want to make a donation to the RSPCA it's best to make it directly to the shelter/branch. Head office donations are very...ahem! slow to make it down the ladder.

I think this is the grey area with larger charities, you hear and know of branches that dont get the donations you think then there's the example above where a branch does rely solely what comes through their doors via the public. Very frustrating as we all like to know where our donations go and you don't want to not support but neither do you want to be misled :(

I agree with this making a donation direct to your local branch will make a difference to lives of rescue animals within your area.

I have found there are two sides to the rspca

the local shelters that run under the umbrella of the rspca, such as walsall, bath cats and dogs home, my local brent knoll etc - and I have adopted from all three, will always support them in any way possible and others like them as these are the places that DO care, that DO work for the good of the animals and DONT follow the same policies as the media have highlighted

And the other side, the main section that are working towards better welfare standards, that ask for will donations, that advertise on the tv etc. This is the side that I dont support, I am anti cruelty but several times I have phoned up to ask for their help on matters to be asked to do it myself mallethead so I must run into a busy road and capture a seagull with just my hands and put it in a magically created carrier box and find a vets willing to take the animal in on a sunday morning. I also had to hold up traffic and on my own capture a distressed sheep, put it in my car and transport to the nearest vets. I was also asked to ignore the fact that the person I witnessed, as did many others kicking and punching his dog because he was "a gas head" and was sorry for his actions, but was going to keep his dog.

And that is just the tip of the iceburg, I wont go further rants about the ineffectiveness of the policies, there have been several cases of cruelty that they have refused to pursue, that I had been aware of and donated to the charities that actually did pursue the cases and got results, they are not what they say they are and not forgetting the cases where will donations have been fought through the courts to gain more money for them with less going to the actual family members.

Anyway I will go off and off if I dont stop.

I agree with sport billy, there are lots of members on here that work with or for the rescues that actually do make a difference, support your local branch, go visit, have a chat and find out more about them and how they help the animals and find out how you can help them continue to do so.

I love the local centres we have as members on here, and i think they do a fantastic job, however my local small animal branch is useless, and gives out very very wrong advice. In my opinion the RSPCA as an organisation has gotten far to big and too varied in their policies to hold any weight in the animal welfare community. Thats not to say smaller well run local branches wont hold weight ofcourse. :)

In my experience of the RSPCA, the people who do it for the animals are fantastic. They're over worked and understaffed. I used to be an RSPCA volunteer and I'd go in and help out on bank holidays, where there was one person to deal with 50 cats, 120 dogs plus rabbits, ferrets, GPs, rats, birds, the lot.

It's the people higher up the chain that give the RSPCA a bad rep.

I emailed then a few months back asking for my donation to change from the big RSPCA to my local branch. You just don't know where the money goes unless it is towards a local branch :(
