Hello!
I'm not sure if this was the right place to put this in, but one of my piggies has a rumbling tummy. I'm not quite sure which piggy it actually is but its been going on for a couple days now.
it just sounds like one of them is still hungry even though they've had a plate full of veggies. At first I thought it was them just digesting their food, then I thought it was because they were hungry but I have this scary thought that maybe its a proper health issue that could be fatal. I've never heard this sound until a couple days ago and I'm just getting a little concerned. it is quite loud rumbling like if you or I hadn't eaten our breakfast and we were waiting until break or lunch. I'm just wandering if any other guinea pigs do this or if its something that should get looked at by a vet.
thanks!

You're absolutely positive it isn't normal rumbling dominance behaviour? My boy Keiko has perfected the art of rumbling at the same time as anything else! He rumbles and eats, rumbles and popcorns, rumbles and stretches out to pet, it's just nonstop with him. Also perhaps try to get a video and if you upload it to YouTube or Instagram you can link it here so other more experienced members can give you better answers. I'll tag in a couple. @Wiebke @Abi_nurse @furryfriends (TEAS)

Just to be clear - is this a rumbling as in a gurgling sound like your tummy makes after you've had a drink or you are hungry or is this the typical rumbling noise that piggies make to communicate?

It's definitely not them communicating its actually their tummies making the sounds. This is why I was a little concerned. I'll try and get a video of it and make a youtube account and put on there and give you guys a link and see what you think.

I have a pig that it happens too and certain foods make it worse. For example he can't eat tomato or dill, or it makes his tum rumble really loud, or sometimes it even makes his heave.

I've taken him to vet about it and we did get kind of a diagnosis. After listening to his stomach for a long time we were told it was like a guinea pig version of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and there's nothing really we can do about it. We have to simply monitor which foods make it worse and not feed them.

I have read that someone used the Oxbow Digestive Support with their pig and it worked so well that she uses it herself for her IBS and has been attack free since starting them.

My pig has them daily, his stomach still rumbles sometimes but *touch wood* I've not seen him heave for a long time.

One thing that the vet did mention is that he'd likely be at higher risk during surgery of Ileus (his digestive system slowing or stopping) so he'll need digestive medications after any surgery he needs.

I would feel better if there was something I could actually do for him, so I would still take your pig to a guinea pig specialist vet to see what they thought and not rely totally on my vets thoughts. I would be interested to find out what they say.

My Violet has the same rumbling /gurgling sound when eating at times as vet has diagnosed IBS (like @Jaycey ). When it happens her poos are also smaller. Are your piggies poops noticeably different?

My pigs poops are always smaller (but he is a naturally smaller pig too). They're sometimes miss shaped but never soft or runny.

I mentioned probiotics to the vet and I was told it won't stop the IBS but it won't harm. So if his poops are not looking great he has a few doses and he's usually back to his norm quickly.

Hello! sorry I haven't said much, my internet was playing up on me. I took both of my pigs to the vet again, because Patches had blood in her urine again so she's now back on baytril. But anyway I asked about Bitzy's rumbling tummy and the vet just said that maybe she's just a bit greedy and eats too fast, she didn't seem to concerned. Bitzys poops are sometimes smaller than usual as I got her out on my lap and she went to the toilet and her poops were smaller. My piggy has never heaved like @Jaycey pig, I've also monitored which foods she can't eat. she also can't have tomatoes anymore (which is a shame as she really likes them!) but so far I'm not to sure of any other foods that she can't eat.

But thank you guys for helping and giving advice! Now my internet is up and running again I will definitely try and get a video.

my piggie has digestive problems and his poo is often soft. His tummy often makes gassy noises and I think he farts a fair bit. It's become the norm for him as I have had his poo's tested, he is definitely worse with some fruit and veggies.
