Hi,

My pig has been squeaking whilst pooping on/off for the last three weeks. Seems to only be when he’s just eaten his fresh veggies, and wears off later on in the day.
He’s been to the vet and they examined him, but couldn’t see or feel anything immediately wrong. He was prescribed a week of Baytril incase it was a UTI. So he’s had that plus probiotics and metacam for pain relief. However symptoms seem to be consistent.
He was booked in for an X-ray yesterday but they didn’t do it in the end, only another examination (I think the vets are reluctant to sedate him). However last night we were back at the emergency vets as he went off his treats, and started rolling onto his side looking uncomfortable. On the way his tummy started gurgling. Emergency vet checked him over and found nothing either, and we were dismissed with a shot of Baytril and Buprenorphine.
Ever since he’s been very spaced out and spooked. He’s still peeing and pooping and eating, but with less enthusiasm. I assumed cos of the medication but he’s still like it now about 20hrs later.
I’m at a loss of what to do, my local vets seem incompetent and the closest exotic vets are an hour away.
Help!

I think you need to see a different vet.
Keep him off veggies, feed him only hay and weigh him daily. If he isn’t eating enough hay and starts to lose weight, then you must syringe feed him
I’ve added some guides in below to help with further information, but he really does need to see a more knowledge vet

Thankyou, I’m nr Lichfield, Staffordshire. I’ve tried looking for exotic vets but I can’t find any within a decent distance.

This is our vet locator Vet Locator. These vets are recommended by members as being cavy savvy.
Obviouslu I don’t know which vet you have already been to, but there is one listed on our vet locator in Lichfield. It may be you need to travel a little further afield though

Please take the time to read the links you have been given. You should find them really helpful. The medical advice has been proof-read by an experienced guinea pig keeping exotics vet nurse.

Here is our vet locator. An hour travel for a specialist vet is not unusual. Mine is about that distance from me, too. Before my husband retired I had to travel by train to and from Northampton with freshly operated piggies quite a few times over the years. They have all survived just fine!
