Hello
I'm in the process of bonding the 6 month old boar I rescued a month ago, with an 11 month old boar.
They've been in a pen in my bedroom, under my supervision for around 10 hours now.
Initially there were a lot of dominance behaviours and I did see the 6m old nip the others rump. However, it didn't look at all serious in the way it happened and as the rump is white and there was no blood I thought it was ok.
I did notice however that the 12m old was very quiet for a while afterwards.
Anyway, they napped and after that were much more amicable - there's been a few minor nose-to-nose scuffles, but no aggressive contact.

However, I just picked them up so I could change their puppy pads and I've seen the 12m old has a deep cut on his rump, no blood, but quite deep.
I've cleaned the wound and put a row of grids down the middle of the pen to seperate them.
I feel so bad. I had no idea! I will take him to the vet tomorrow, but my questions are:

a) How do I treat the wound tonight?
b) Is this bonding now completely failed?

Thanks in advance x

There's lots of information you will find helpful in these guides.
Behaviour, Bonding & Bereavement Guides
I have two boars of similar ages who bonded easily at 3 and 6 months but fell out with a deep bite to the older ones rump 3 months later when the younger one hit the 6 month hormone spike. I did try to rebond unsuccessfully after a short seperation. My two live in perfect harmony in a divided C&C cage with interaction through the bars. I feel this is the best I can do for them as I don't want any more piggies.

Thanks for replying.
I have read all the guides here and anything else I can find.
Should I wait and reintroduce once they're both older or try again tomorrow?
A divided cage would be my only option too, as I now have six piggies in total! Xx

I have 6 too! I wouldn't do anything until you have seen your vet, if he is a piggy expert I sure he could advise you. Really it's up to you, I'm no expert but I think given their difficult ages and the fact there is a bad bite I would leave it at least a year until they are hopefully out of their hormone spikes. I suspect your injured piggy will be fear agressive after that experience. I would watch their interaction carefully when they are living side by side and decide later if there's any chance of them living in the same cage. When mine first went in the divided cage they bit the divider and went mad trying to get to each other. I covered the divider with a spare bit of corex so they couldn't see each other and gradually moved it away for longer and longer periods until they settled (I think this took about a week maybe two). Now they chat, exchange food and sleep side by side with out so much as a rumble strut.

Sorry, I should have said welcome to the forum.
I am sure you will get some more expert opinion tomorrow. This is a UK based site so most of the members are off line now until the morning.

Thank you for your help.
I'm in the UK too - I'm just so worried I had to post now! Lol
The bitten boar seems very subdued and depressed. I'll get him checked out first thing, but this has worried me so much I think I'll keep them divided until they're older.
So far they're sleeping side by side, so they definitely seem happier with this set up.
Fingers crossed the bitten one is okay, bless him.

How did you get on with the vet @CBN79 I hope your boy is okay.

Hi. Sorry for such a late reply!
I didn't need a vet in the end thankfully. The next day the wound was healing really well and showed no signs of infection.
Now a week or so on and it's absolutely fine, so I'm very relieved!
These two boars are now next door neighbours, but I've had to completely block their view of eachother for now.
I'm hoping I can eventually lift what blocks their view and have them happily live side-by-side, before attempting a reintroduction when the younger of the pair is out of puberty x

Just realised @piggieminder you are the one who gave me that advice in the first place! Lol.
So in short, I've listened and taken it! 😊
