Hi,

My Peples had surgery in January, so about 8 weeks ago. She had a hysterectomy after losing a tumour from her womb. She has a runny bum. She seems ok in all other ways. I think it has been going on for 1 week. I have just seen it on her bum, so now I know who it is.

What should I do? Monitor? Book up with the vet?

My other piggy who had her bladder stone out 6 weeks ago feels firmer around her bits. Again, should I just monitor? I am not immediately worried as at this stage I think not much could be done and she seems ok.

Thanks Wiggie

Hi Wiggie,

I would have Peples seen by the vet asap if it has been going on for a week. Is she maintaining her weight ok or losing? What are you feeding her? Is she on antibiotics or any other meds or has she had some recently?

She had all meds for about 1-2 weeks post op pain killers, zantac and antibiotics, she stopped them 5-6 weeks ago. I have changed her to celery and tomatoe and cucumber. She stopped eating parsley and spinach as she is on a low calcium diet. Her water is now bottled and not from the tap due to lower calcium. This is due to Lily having the bladder stone. I have changed all of their diets ie less food and all low calcium. I am also dieting my piggies so I have not been able to use weight loss as a guide to illness. They are on diets to avoid illness under the vets instruction.

What do you think?

I would try to get her eating lots of hay for fibre but definitely get her to the vets as soon as possible. She could become really ill if it goes on.

I have some probiotics still so I could give that a go. She seems ok just now. I need the main vet as the others are a waste of time. I will need to check when she is next in.

I have spoken to the vets, they both have check ups booked in a few days time. I will monitor closely tonight and tomorrow any concerns the vets is open at the weekend. The vet who operated on both of them will call me monday morning and discuss and inform me what she wants me to do. My hubby is not immediately worried as she thinks she is behaving normally. I think with Peples I would be reluctant to put her through too much more if possible. I will try probiotics and keep off veggies. She has had a rough year.

Maybe still give her some veggies as they are an important part of a pigs diet. My opinion anyway... Lettuce and bell peppers are a safe bet. Not iceberg lettuce though.
