My piggy, Clare, has a nasty eye injury. Simon, the vet, looked at it yesterday and thinks she has riuptured the eye. At the moment she is on the antibiotic Zithromax, plus Chloramphenical eye drops and Metacam. We are reviewing the situation tomorrow. She's lively enough in herself and eating welll, although the eye clearly hurts her!

At the moment I feel its just one thing after another and no time to get over one, before I get hit with the next!

Oh Debbie, you have had a time of it...it never rains but it pours! Sending best wishes to Clare and hope it isnt too serious and gets better with the current treatment :)

Awww poor Clare, wishing her a speedy recovery xoxoxoxo

Hugs to you xx

Oh no :( debbie you poor thing. Big hugs to you and Clare, really hope she's better soon x

Thanks everyone! Realistically the chance of saving the eye is very slim. Simon doesn't want to remove it just yet though, as he would prefer her to have been on antibiotics for a few days, to ensure any infection around it is minimal. If there is signs of improvement tomorrow, we will play a bit of a waiting game.

Debbie, you know how sorry I am about Clare. Wishing her lots of healing xx

Darling i'm so sorry you know how we both feel, we were saddened to hear about little Clare 8...8... but then to hear that she might have to have an op........but thank goodness it's Simon he's a whizz at piggies and we feel confident if he can save her eye he will xxxxxxxxxx

SUPER DUPER HUGS for you both from us xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

So sorry to hear about Clare.:( I'm sure she will cope well though if she does have to have the eye out. We had a cat that had to have its eye out years ago and she was only 4 when she had the accident but she lived to be 18 years old and managed really well.:)

I'm trying to stay positive about it. I'm sure she would cope fine with just one eye.

Clare like to share with you all some information about her past though! When she was a baby, Clare appeared in Grange Hill! She's a very down to earth piggy though and hasn't let the celebrity status go to her head!

I'm so sorry to hear this, I do hope she doesn't lose the eye. But if she does, it gives a lot of confidence to hear that your vet is so good. She is obviously in safe hands. Hugs and good luck! x

Oh crumbs Debbie, it certainly is one thing after another! Sending positive vibes for poor Clare. If she does lose her eye I'm sure she will cope just fine, particularly with such a devoted cavy slave to care for her!

Try not to feel too disheartened (I know that's easy for me to say).My piggie had a corneal ulcer and she was 8 at the time. The vet said because it was so deep the eye would have to be removed. I said no way and said that I wanted to try treatment first. She was on Tiacil eye drops 3 times daily for 2 weeks and the ulcer had halved in size. She then got an infection in it and they changed the treatment to Fucilthamic (Sp?) and after a further treatment using this for 4 weeks the ulcer completely healed and the eye was no longer cloudy. The eye was saved. When the eye was clogged to together each morning I would clean the gunk from around the eye with warm salt water and then apply the treatment. I hope Clare responds well to treatment and will be thinking of you both x

Clare is having her eye removed today. We have just been to see Simon and although infection wise it is looking a lot better, the eye itself is protruding badly. The damage to the eye is so severe that she would never regain her sight in it. Hopefully as long as all goes well, she will be back home this evening. She has taken Blossom (her mum) and Petal (sister) with her. Poppet is also in today having her teeth done, so she has lots of familiar faces around her.

Aww,i'm so sorry about little Clare (great name btw!) I hope she recovers well. On facebook I've spoken to someone who's piggie had his eye removed, but he lived happily and healthily for a good few years. He was only young when he had it done, but I'm sure he lived to a ripe age, he had his removed due to a tumor.

Sending all our love and get well wishes. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Still haven't heard anything. Tried to go clothes shopping but couldn't settle to even looking at anything properly and didn't try a thing on! Abandoned that idea and have back home. Haven't got children today until school pick up time so plenty of time to worry! I know she couldn't be in better hands, so trying to keep positive.

I'm sorry to hear that the eye has to be removed. Fingers crossed that the operation goes well. Thinking of you both xx

Hope everything has gone well and try not to worry too much although I know that will be hard. :(

Hope everything goes well for you :)
Cookie was perfectly fine adapting with one eye. They use their wiskers alot to sense things.

Well I went to collect Clare around 6.30, and if it wasn't for the fact you can see she has an eye missing, you wouldn't know she had had surgery just a few hours ago. She is absolutely fine. Eating loads, dashing around the cage with her mum and sister, and looks a lot better than she has this past few days when she has clearly been in pain. Its such a huge relief!

Glad she's recovering well! Well done Clare! I think once you've got rid of the thing causing the problem, you can start to recouperate. God Bless her and all our thoughts are with her x
