Rusty was the little boar I didn't want. I didn't even choose him. When we lost Willow the only rescue I could find that would accept Bracken for boar dating had a 3 month waiting list, Bracken had stopped eating. I told the ladies in the shop any one as long as it's a boar. They gave me Rusty, they said he was being bullied all the time by the others, he just spent all the time sat in a corner looking sad. Of course I was soon in love. Rusty and Bracken adored each other, Bracken taught Rusty how to be a guinea pig. Sadly just over a year later Bracken lost his battle against bladder and kidney stones. Rusty was paired with Caspian who had fallen out big time with Red. They lived together for a year until Caspian started bullying Rusty and he spent most of the time looking sad in his hidey. When Spike died Rusty moved in with Peanut, two quiet boys who really loved each other. Rusty was lost when Peanut died at the age of 7. We tried to bond him with Brillo but after two months Brillo bullied him relentlessly, Rusty was such a gentle boar he would never answer back. He seemed happiest in his own cage next to Nugget.
Rusty always seemed to be in heaven in the run on the grass in the summer. I wish I could have given him one more summer but it wasn't to be.
Two years ago Rusty had a stone removal operation from which he had a slow recovery but he did recover and he managed to stay stone free, I was so hopeful he would make a grand old age like Peanut did. Sadly last week disaster struck and he developed a respiratory infection.
Rusty passed in his favourite fleece tunnel after an afternoon on my lap. I knew he was going, it was a very peaceful passing filled with love. He gave a little squeak which I took to mean he wanted to go back to his cage. I lowered him in with his head by the tunnel, he wiggled in with his head out the end and seconds later I knew he'd gone, the light went out of his eyes. My partner had just walked into the room as I put Rusty into the cage so we were both there to say good bye to our special boy. Sweet dreams Rusty, run free with your old friends, Bracken, Peanut and Spike.
