Hi all
I am new to this but, i am just not sure what to do for the best... yesterday I very sadly lost one of my two ladies, Lilly. She was gorgeous! Poppy is now left in the large open run that i had for them.. she just seems so sad (as expected). They are/were both 4.5 years old and been together since they were babies..
I just dont know what to do, i am just not sure that it would be wise to introduce a new piggie at this later stage.. i am just not sure if she would take to anyone else.. But, on the other hand she is so lonely she just keeps on sniffing around and squeeking .. i dont want her to spend the rest of her days sad and alone either!

The run is very large and could take two new pigs i guess ( safety in numbers maybe?!?!?)

Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks All xx

I think personally I would go for 2 baby girls hopefully poppy will accept them as youngsters and live her days out with them happily and probably as boss pig, if you got just one pig then when poppy goes you will be back to square one where you are right now, so sorry to hear about Lilly :'( 0:), and welcome to the forum ;)

I also think it would be best to get 2 young sows (girls) to go with her, Just like Michellemuffin said when poppy goes you be back to were you are now.

Sorry about the loss of lilly :'(

So very sorry to hear of your loss.

I agree with what the others have said.

Welcome to the forum :)

Thanks all for your speedy replies !
Well yes, the run is plenty big enough for three together.. I really dont want her to be alone..
Do you think its worth leaving her a little (to get over her loss so to speak) or do you think this then runs the risk of her kind of getting use to living on her own maybe?

Hiya, welcome to the forum, I've only been registered for 2 weeks myself, it's a great site.

Firstly, so sorry about Lilly :'( :'(. Poor Poppy.

It would be a shame for Poppy to spend the rest of her days lonely. We had a rabbit, Mitzi, who died before Christmas, who lived with our piggy Molly. Molly (now 2) had never known life without Mitzi and just sat in the corner without her. After two days without Mitzi (she was in the vets for 2 days before she died), we bought a new friend for Molly and she accepted her very readily and seemed happy to have the company. (I know yours were together longer but I don't know if they have quite the same concept of time that we have.) We then bought 2 more baby girls, again, Molly accepted them, and yesterday I bought a little ginger teddy piggie who was all alone in the pet shop and I couldn't bear the thought of her there. Yet again, Molly has accepted her too. (I call her Auntie Molly!) And yes, she is boss pig too!

(ps just seen your other post, I think I'd get them sooner rather than later)
Guineas seem the gentlest, sweetest creatures, they are very happy living with other guineas and from what I've read, are not keen on their own company too much. I think your Poppy would probably take very well to any new pigs you get. Good luck whatever you decide x

Agree, I would get them sooner rather then later. She won't get over losing her friend in a couple of weeks so what she really needs is one or two new friends that will comfort her. :)

yes I also agree dont leave it too long as she may pine for Lilly and it can happen they pine away its happend to me before so please find her two new friends to cheer her up and quick see if you can find 2 baby sows

yes, i think i will. thanks ladies. have had guinea pigs since i was 8 but, use to have up to 10! so only having 1 now seems really weird and not really been in this situation before!
Thanks again for your lovely replies!
Would love to rescue but, i have quickly checked my area (staffordshire) and can't really see anything. Is anyone out there in this area who could point me in the direction of a good rescue centre?
Sorry I am asking a lot of you guys tonight arent i!?! ha ha ha

Thanks again !
xx

Since you have owned guineas before you could probably sex them but just making the point if you do buy a couple from a store make sure they are females as many shops make mistakes. By rehoming you could be sure they were sows, but if you buy a couple and your not sure if they are girls have a vet have a look at them. :)

;D No I doubt she is that lonely, pictures when you get the new ones. Is she O.K. in herself?

Well she is definately not herself, you know when you can just tell that they are different... she keeps on sniffing around and squeeking...she is at least started back on a little more food now which is better than yesterday xx

Welcome to the forum, and i also agree with what has already been said! getting 2 new guineas soon will probably work out best.

I had a similar situation about 2 years ago. I had 2 rabbits together, Charlie and Harriet. They were inseparable and had been together for about 3 years! When my lovely Charlie got fly strike, it was too much for him to handle and he died at the vets. I was gutted, not just for myself but for Harriet, she was from the RSPCA and she was so shy until she met Charlie. She was on her own for just a day before i went out and got Pepper for her. It may sound harsh, like i was forgetting about charlie and trying to 'replace him' but it worked really well as Harriet had no time to pine and be sad about Charlie as someone new was in her life. The sooner animals can have company again after a loss the better. I feel they grieve and feel the loss more than we do!

Hope it all works out for you.
