Hi After some advice please. I has two sister guinea pigs who were 18 months old. Ana developed a breathing issue on Fri and despite being given medicine from the vets we sadly found her this morning passed away. My 6 year old daughter is beside herself and although its early days I am wondering what to do about Elsa who’s is now on her own. We are at work in the day so she will be lonely and I would like to get another friend for her. I wondered is there a section on the site that provides advice on this please? I was thinking of a rescue piggy rather than buy another young piggy as may be better but am not sure what is best in this situation. Any advice any one can give would be gratefully received.
Thanks :-(

Hello,

Sorry for late reply. Glad you got this posted only just saw your pm. I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Ana, it is always hard to lose a much loved pet and sounds like a complete shock which makes it even harder at times.

Here is a link on how to help a bereaved piggy https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/looking-after-a-bereaved-guinea-pig.110463/

Rescue piggies are a great way to go as Rescues do piggy dating that would help Elsa find a new friends that she gets on with Our recommended rescue locator is herehttps://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/pages/guinea-pig-rescue-locator/ The Potteries rescue is near to you and they are amazing.

Is Elsa eating okay?

Sorry for your loss. I hope you find Elsa a friend soon with help from a rescue. If you have the opportunity to take her dating she gets to pick her own friend and it will be less likely it goes wrong. Good luck.

I'm so sorry for your loss. The links that Sport Billy has posted should help you work out the best thing to do for Elsa.

I'm sorry for your loss. Pleased you are thinking about a rescue for a friend for elsa. You and your family are in my thoughts xx

Thanks for kind words and thought will take a look at the links. Yes elsa is eating fine but just not coming out of her house she would normally come running up to you so she is not herself. They have been together since they were born so it's bound to effect her. Like the sound of the potteries and piggy dating - Will let you know how I get on. Thanks for advise much appreciated as hard to know what to do for the best x

Hi,

We were in the same position a few months ago. 2 x 20 month old girls. Fudge who was left changed and was seeking our attention lots and become very vocal.

We couldn't find a suitable single friend so we introduced 2 x 10 week old babies and she mothers them. She was aggressive with Smudge at times so this seems to have worked.

Smudge and Fudge would never share food, and would end up with arguments. Its funny watching the little ones and Fudge all eating together!

Good Luck

Barry

Sorry for you sad loss. It is always very hard.

Just a note to keep an eye on Elsa and it might be an idea to get her checked with a vet, just in case she has picked up something from Ana. Breathing problems are sometimes difficult unless caught very early as they can soon take hold and especially in a bereaved guinea pig, where the immune system may be affected.

That's very sad to read, I'm sorry for your loss, and I hope your Daughter is OK. It can be very hard on youngsters, and us adults at times too!
The Potteries are very highly spoken of, so I hope you have some luck there with finding a perfect match for her. If she doesn't take to an adult then babies are usually well accepted.
Please keep us updated.

HI All,

Good news we went to the potteries yesterday for a piggy dating session. We tried Elsa with two baby girls and a 3 year old girl called Holly. Holly also lost her life companion last week too. Good news was that Elsa got on really well with Holly - she had a good sniff and even started to lick her ear! I left the decision down to my daughter to pick and did think she would go for the two babies but she said she liked Holly the best as Elsa liked her the best and also because she is sad too as lost her friend :-) so we have brought Holly home with us. They are getting on well and snuggling up at night. Holly struggling with the ramps in the hutch and needs encouragement to get up and down them but I remember Anna and Elsa doing the same so will just take some time. Holly has cataracts in her eyes but other than that is very healthy and happy to be handled.

Thanks for the advise about the vet JackJack with Elsa. I did just that took her last tues and the vet checked her out and thankfully she is fine no issues other than being sad at loosing her mate. Glad Fuge has found a couple of new friends too Barry :-)

The potteries rescue centre were great. They do such a great job taking in lots of rescue piggies. Takes up a lot of time for the ladies that run it. Mandy and Helen couldn't have been more helpful and understanding. Their web site has loads of useful advise on it too. Would most certainly recommend them. Thanks Sport_Billy for the advise. I am really pleased we have got a rescue piggie :-)

So a nice end to a sad start of the week. Here is a picture of Elsa (white / black) with her new pal Holly (Brown black). First one is during their dating session and the second back at home here.

What fantastic news! It has worked well all round. You have 2 guinea pigs now found a friend to share life with. Your daughter is happy and it is wonderful she chose Holly because she was sad too at losing a mate - what a lovely thought and there is one less in rescue and now in a loving home. It is sad that Holly has cataracts, but wonderful that she has found a mate to share life with again.

What a lovely, happy ending.
