Safe Paint or Varnish for an Indoor run

Hello, my partner has built a lovely indoor run for our two 6 month old boys. It's untreated wood and Perspex sides but a plywood base. What paint or varnish can you recommend for the floor? and maybe the wooden posts. They don't appear to be big chewers - but you never know, one has started to have a little gnaw at the bars of the cage. I'm planning to put fleece liners down but I've read that most paints are not suitable due to VOC levels giving off toxic fumes, so I'm a little worried (first time as a guinea pig mum so everything is causing me concern where my boys are involved). Any help is much appreciated.

Try Cuprinol garden shades as that is one all of people have said to use to brighten hutches and wood up.

thanks, we decided to leave it unvarnished and I have covered it with sheets and cage liners.... see how it goes.
