Hi everyone,

Our two little piggies, Sweetie & Tufty.

Absolutly adore the above. We know that to much of any one food is not good for anyone. And there seems to be a difference of opinion about what food is good for cavies.

So what's a good daily amount of the above, any ideas?.

Thanks

I have always given my little ones spinach as I grow this in my garden (and buy it in the winter when its not growing!), and chard. I have also read that you shouldn't give them too much, so I give mine approx a handful (I suppose this would be about 20 leaves of the baby stuff, less if fully grown leaves) each day. I also give them spring greens which are readily available at the moment. I give them some parsley occasionally but have also heard that you shouldn't give them much of this too!

I'd also be really interested in any comments about how much spinach to give.

Spinach is quite high in calcium so i would feed it once/twice a week, as i heard it can cause bladder stones if given in large amounts. I know that everyones opnions will be different on this.

You may also notice that your pigs will have more chalky urine deposits when you feed high calcium foods such as spinich, parsely, kale, chard etc.
I personally dont feed any high calicum food that often only as a treat once a month, but that is my personal view as i have a pig who has had bladder problems on and off and he has IC and high ca foods seem to irrate his bladder.

:)

I've also heard about too much spinach causing bladder stones so I tend not to give spinach on its own but usually I use the mixed baby leaf packs from asda/ tesco etc which contain spinach, chard and other lettuce. Thats 1 bag for the 4 girls about 3 times aweek. Never noticed them having chalky or gritty wee.

I don't give mine much spinach for the reasons as above about bladder stones. I buy the mixed bags of salad so that they get a little spinach but not too much.
