i buy my guineas the bags of salad out of the supermarkets.

they are well within the sell by date, and are fresh & crisp when i buy them.

as soon as i open the bag to give some out, the rest seems to rot within 24 hrs:(

i have tried storing in a sealed container in the fridge, but condensation makes all go to mush as well.

i tried in the sealed container out of the fridge, not much betterrolleyes

how do you store yours on here?

i managed to get a salad from asda with the roots still attached, so you can dampen roots every day and keeps fresh longer.

but would like to stop the bags of ready made up salad from going off before i have a chance to use it all:{

I bought veg bags from Wilkinsons. (they were advertised on TV) I think they were £5 for 15 (3 diff sizes) but they can be washed & re-used.
They're treated with something that does something to the gasses fruit n veg give off which makes them go off. :)

We buy normal veg, and when we make a sunday lunch we take the stalks and ends of the veg (e.g. cauliflower stalks) and put them in a food bag and store them in a cupboard up the garage for the pets. We just fold the end of the bag over. The veg stays fresh for days.

Hope this helps

xx

Salad bags don't stay fresh up to the use by date, even if stored correctly. I have found this, so only use them now in an emergency. The three lettuces that asda have in a bag, with roots, do last a good while though. Maybe stick with the normal stuff, rather than washed pre packed. xx

I have experienced the same, if you don't use the bags up in 2 days you have to throw them away. I get the freshly growing salad from LIDL, it grows in trays and you can water the soil as well, it stays fresh for longer :).

might try lidl, and will maybe stick to the salad with roots!

ive been putting them out more on grass, so will use less of the bagged salad:))

I buy 1 smaller bag of mixed leaves/ salad when I do my weekly piggie veg shop, but use it first, I only use it for a bit of variety. Although I spent nearly £30 last week so I think I maybe give them variety enough! I think it's better to spend for veggies with the piggies in mind, because there's no waste, unlike my daughter who turns her nose up at most fruit and veg.

i tried pre packed once and never again, first it smelt really poison like I'm guessing some pesticide?.
it went limp and bad withing 1 day,i find fresh lettuce and storing it in the fridge and sitting in a small amount of water keeps it nice longer;),Cos seems to be the best here for lasting longest;)

I keep meaning to buy those bags - they look great. Think you can get something similar on QVC too.

dont buy bags of veg - they will never last. thats why they are called perrisables (even if its spelled wrong)

iceberg stays fresh for a while but little gem and romaine are also good

my piggies cannot get enough of it

also growing your own is good, leave it in the ground and pick from it

Cellery is another favorite

My dad did me a trough of 'pick and come again' lettuce, which as the name suggests - you just pick the leaves and it grows back. The piggies love it!

The only way I've found to keep veg fresher is to wrap it up in kitchen roll, then put it back in the bag. The drier it is, the more likely it is to stay fresh - wet veg goes mouldy.
