I just temporarily rescued a pig from domestic violence situation that a friend of mine escaped last night. The boyfriend is now in jail for good reason, he beat her and strangled her guinea pig. The pig survived luckily, but is experiencing extreme swelling around the neck and shoulder area. Feels like her dewlap area is filled with fluid. I'm in no position to get her to a vet right now, neither is my friend. Any idea what this could be? She's still eating, but spending a lot of time in her bed with her head tucked down. Anything I can do to help her in the meantime?

Oh no.. how awful both for your friend and her piggy. All I can recommend is to take the piggy to the vets. Sounds like she really needs to see a vet and it would be awful for her to be in pain or suffering. Please take her to see a vet. They are delicate little animals. Xx

So sorry for you and your friend and the piggy. Please make sure everyone gets the needed help.
Vet , doctor and legal. Women’s refuges can offer your friend good advice and help.
Good for you supporting her and piggy.

Oh that's awful! Your poor friend and her piggy! Wouldn't be surprised if this monster of a boyfriend strangled the poor piggy in front of her cos he knew it would hurt her even more! Some people are very horrible! The piggy sounds like she is in pain. Please try and take her to a vet as soon as you can. In the meantime just try and keep the piggy as comfy as possible with loads of hay and give her a quiet place to snuggle down in as she will be very frightened. Your friend is in need of loads of tlc too. :hug:to all! X

Hi!

How horrible! I am very sorry about the situation your friend and you are finding yourself in.

It sounds like she may need to see a vet as soon as possible, as she will be in terrible pain and may have internal damage.

Please weigh her daily at the same time and start top up support feeding as soon as she loses more than 50g/2 oz. Mushed up pellets and water will do as long as you prep the syringe tip as shown in the guide to allow the fibre to come through. You can get a 1 ml needle-free syringe from a pharmacy.

Could you contact a guinea pig rescue if you cannot pay for a vet?
UK: Guinea Pig Rescue Centre Locator
Some other countries: Guinea Lynx :: Rescue Organizations

Poor piggy and your friend. I hope they both recover from this soon :(

Another thought - if you are in the UK the RSPCA may also help in dealing with the boyfriend and get him on cruelty to the guinea pig as well as abuse of your friend

How dreadful for both your friend and her piggy! I obviously don't know what region you are in, but could you get to a Vets4Pets in the uk? You may not rate them for whatever reason, but they are open when other vets are not. Best wishes to you, your friend and her piggy and hope things turn out ok for them soon

Well done to you for helping your friend out of an awful situation. Sounds like the pig will need a vet and some pain killers...

There are no exotics vets around here for 60 miles and my friend needs more help right now than a pet, unfortunate as that is. I'm monitoring piggie carefully though. She's a bit lethargic but will get up if she hears the fridge and beg for food. I'm guessing that the squishy feeling swelling in the neck and shoulders is maybe due to lymph fluid after having the tissues crushed and bruised. There's no broken bones as far as I can feel. I'm hoping it's not a hematoma. She's moving like her head is heavy or hard to lift. I'm trying to keep her comfortable as possible with extra little pillows in her bed. Gave her a bit of trammadol I had left over. Will keep everyone posted.

My Vets4Pets is really good and I feel they love my Piggies as much as I do. They have always given them the best care and I certainly won't be taking my Piggies anywhere else.

Same with my Vets4Pets too :)

Poor poor piggy and your poor friend. Piggy really does need to see a vet; any vet is better than none right now.
Good luck!

I use a local vets4pets too, I only go to the exotics vet when they refer me as they know its outside of their expertise.

Unfortunately exotics vets doesn't guarantee that they are knowledgeable with piggies and we have found that many "everyday" vets practices have a good deal of knowledge and a high level of care with piggies. If you have a look at our vet locator in the top toolbar this is vets that forum members have recommended from personal experience.

One of the vets had piggies when she was little and also when she was a vet student so I either ask for her (Rachel) or the owner (Mark) both are very good if they aren't available any of the other vets are more than competent at looking after my pigs.

Hi everyone that commented about Vets4Pets. It was not meant in a derogatory way whatsoever as I have taken one of my piggies there in the past and they were really good. When I mentioned 'rating. them I was trying to remain neutral by not recommending particular ones, as I would not be qualified to say either way! Sorry if I mis-lead anyone.

@ValleyPeegz It sounds like your friend is in a terrible situation and the last thing they need is a poorly piggy. Would they be willing to surrender the pig to a rescue? Then it would get the vet treatment that it needs. You and your friend could then concentrate on dealing with their situation.

I hope everything is okay and your friend manages to find safety and happiness x

My god what a truly awful thing to happen. I hope your friend gets the support she needs and hopefully the piggy will have a good outcome. I was just going to say the same as @Jaycey as in would the piggie be better off somewhere that can provide the attention it needs. It sounds like she has a lot going on and it may be a relief for her to not have to worry about it and know it is being cared for x

Hi, unfortunately pets are often caught in middle of the violence. I've seen some horrible cases...
RSPCA will be able to take him and would consider prosecution. But time is vital as he needs treatment and evidence needs to be noted down. Please, call 24/7 line on 03001234999 to discuss options.
They used to run pet retreat scheme, which helped thousands of animals like this. Basically looked after until owner finds somewhere safe to go. But it was costing too much so had to be postponed until further notice.... shame :td:

Poor piggie and poor person. :( I don't know what to say except that.
Hoping everything works out for all involved.
