took a drive to a village not far from me, and remembered i needed some hay so nipped in to see if they had any. they had run out but in there were 2 gorgeous satin girl piggies, both a yellowy colour, buth looked exactly identical! ive never seen a satin until today and knew they were straight away they were so shiny they were gorgeous.

i was a little sad they were being sold in a pet shop as they were so beautiful and looked like pure breeds too, both looked very healthy, but i just felt sad seeing satins in a pet shop, dont know why, but i only expected to see them in rescues or from breeders, not in a little pet shop in a tiny derbyshire village, i know that sounds random but I'm so used to seeing random cross breeds in pet shops.

dont think the guy at the shop had any clue about them

very.

they were soooo gorgeous! £8 each they were asking for them. the piggies were the only small animals they had in. they had tonns of birds and parrots, then 2 cages one of which was empty and the 2nd had these gorgeous girls in! :smitten:

I'm worried they will be bought by someone with no knowledge, who wont appreciate them though :-\ ive never even seen a satin in real life before, in fact ive hardly seen a pure breed piggy, as every single one ive seen in pet shops before, and even my boys are dolly mixtures
but i dont know many other people with piggies so i mainly only see pet shop pigs

i know. as i say i dont think the pet shop guy had a clue about piggys at all. just enough to keep them clean fed and watered til they sell.

I'm soooo tempted but i have no financial backing to take on more piggies until i finish uni, plus king bob the boss piggy in my room wont allow more piggies into his kingdom ;D

i dont wanna see them go to some random person buying them for their kid though :-\ or even worse, they get seperated. they were obviously sisters and so obviously well bonded together

:'( :'( :'( :'( that's sad love....

i can just imagine Bob ::) ::) ::) ::) ;D ;D ;D ;D
Munchie would love it tho....mmm his harem :smitten: :smitten:

;D ;D I'm sure munchie would settle quite nicely with a nice pair of laydees considering his behaviour! ;D although I'm still not sure if he prefers girl or boy piggies atm, considering his only company is bob ;D
poor bob has had a few nasty suprises ;D

i dont know what to do though, i cant stop thinking about these girl piggies.
they werent exactly babies either, unlike the usual pet shop piggies. they looked about the same age, maybe slightly younger than my housemates piggys, about 4 months-ish

ill have a look thanks O0 i knew they didnt all get it, but same as you I'm not happy about them being in a pet shop, i really was suprised to see them there but the guy had no clue, i didnt say anything though.

i agree i really cant buy these piggys, i can afford to take care of them but could never afford vet bills if anything went wrong, only have a big enough budget for 2 piggies for vet trips :(

i would definately get them if i had the money, but i just cant stop thinking about them. they really were adorable

You could try posting on here to see if anyone wants them and then you could get them and whoever wants them could pick them up from you? Obviously just a suggestion :) they sound lovely :smitten:

problem is i dont have my spare cage handy atm as i lent it to a friend to borrow til her own arrives.

id also feal bad mentioning them in the rehoming section on here, as there are already so many piggies who need to be rescued in there, i couldnt add 2 petshop piggies to the list even though they are not your average pet shop piggies (i know that came out wrong but hope you get my meaning)

Yes i know what you mean, just thought that they would definately go to good homes with someone from here :) I'm sure they'll get a good home, hopefully even if the person is inexperienced they'll have the presence of mind to do some research and maybe even end up here :)

My herd is mostly Satin, 3 from breeders the others all gifts (!) from rescues :) The two heaviest pigs in my she are x bred Satin Sows at 3 pound 2 and 3 pound. But my smallest is also Satin at around 2 pound. ::)
There are often Satins in rescues now, just never when you look or have room! I saw a gorgeous Lilac Tan Satin at a rescue near me (and she was a sow!) but had no room :(

Wow Karen how do you get them so fat(in a good way :) )? I love chubby piggies they're so cuddly :smitten:

thats true, but noone seems to live close enough to me who could take them either. i live in derby, and these piggies were a good 35 mins away from my house. if anyone was in the area or in nottingham/sheffield area and wanted them, id gladly help to make sure they go to good homes, if i hadnt lent out my nero 3, i could have housed them temporarily if someone wanted them, but as i said i let a friend borrow it :(

awww your satins sound great karen! i think satins are gorgeous! especially these two. they were cuddled up together munching hay, so cute <3 if i had already left uni i wouldnt have even thought twice about getting them, i would have got them there and then as i planned to expand my piggy herd once id left and got a permanent job

Pandora the biggest is total muscle, not an ounce of fat on her, shes a longish girl too- very slim ::) and you won't get a cuddle from her! Shes a look but don't touch girl :) Would bite her nails if she could reach, very happy though and sticks up for herself.

We thought Hope was preggers when she arrived, shes pearshaped and still preggers looking ::) I think you can only bring out the potential in a guinea, you can't control metabolism n' stuff- Hope's metabolism is like mine LOL!

Just tell him Karen says its a cool venture with excellent returns and a good turnaround (but look where you step ;) )

Enjoy being a pet piggy owner, believe me your time will come :)

Is it possible to breed out the problems that are associated with Satins?

This is not meant to be a question about breeding standards etc, but for health query; please let me know mods if I'm allowed to ask this question without contravening the rules of the boards?

Apparently the problems cannot be bred out - something to do with genes I believe - whatever it is it is far too complex for my little brain! 98)

they were really really gorgeous! i was soooooo tempted. i dunno how quickly they will go, as this is a pretyt small village, its a tiny shop, etc plus with a large pets at home not far away I'm not sure how many people actually use that shop

Nothing has been 'proved' either way. But the breed has been outcrossed to most other varieties of guinea if not all and is still present which would suggest not, but my last Satin was a purebred and died aged 5, no OD showing even on xray, she was typy and well bred. My heaviest pig is a Satin pet. But that doesn't mean she won't get it. It seems there are some lines that are more affected than others.

TBH I have not seen many 'pure breed' pigs in any pet shops for a while now. I know Pets at Home are only taking them from certain suppliers not smaller breeders like they did before. Most of their pigs, no offence to anyone or any pig are Tort and White and very ratty faced. I did see some Rex in the pet shop up from the one I work in.
I have a Cream Satin Crested Sow, she is gorgeous. I adore my Satins.
:)
