Scab on my piggie

Is ** piggie living with others? I might be wrong, but one of my piggies had scabs like that and it turned out my two boars were fighting, but like I said I might be wrong.

Is there a history of any skin conditions at all? such as mites or fungal? Is your pig scratching at all? or seems in pain? does the hair come out easily? Is there anything that looks like dandruff?

Yeah one of mine had a fungal infection a few months back but it cleared up with treatment from the vet. But this looks different. if i go anywhere near it she flinches and she keeps scratching it. No dandruff looking stuff

Ok, thank you. It's difficult to say as most scabs itch as they are healing, so it could either be fungal (a different type), mites or a wound. I would speak to the vet. What were you given by the vet to treat fungal before? did they say what type of fungal it was? such a ringworm or another type? Do you have any pain relief for her, such as Metacam? Has she had any mite treatment recently?

That makes sense as they can get an overgrowth of Candida.

I am leaning more towards mites and she has scratched herself raw and left a scab. When was her last mite treatment? I think I can see hairs that are broken half way down the shaft and this would indicate mites though it is possible for them to get a combination mites and fungal problem.

Where abouts is the scab? and where was the fungal last time?

Does she live with other pigs though and have you seen any aggression?

I don't think its mites as my other piggie who lives with her is fine. They seem to get on very well. Its in the middle of her back

It doesn't always follow that both pigs would have it as they can get them if they are run down, all pigs have them in their system and they can overpopulate sometimes, so one pig may show symptoms while another doesn't.

I would get a vet appointment and see what they say, if the vet does think it is mites, I would ask for injection rather than Spot on as it is more effective and less likely to cause a reaction to a pig that is already sensitive. Alternatively, Panomec (the injectible form of Ivermectin) can be given orally at a dose of 0.1ml and this is what is given at the piggy clinic I recently volunteered at.

If you think she is in pain at all, they can have children's Nurofen at a dose of 0.2ml twice a day. This is taken from page 493 of the Exotic Animal Formulary by James W Carpenter. This is if you don't have access to prescription pain relief from the vet and she appears to be in pain.
