Hey all :-) I'm off to the vetslater today with my newest piggy, I knew when I got her I was going to have issues with her health as the lady in Leeds where I got her from was really naive and a bit dodgy and I left extremely concerned for the remaining piggies health (contemplating ringing RSPCA it's that bad)for this reason I have kept her in a quarantine cage for 2 weeks just in case (she's currently 8 weeks old today) however she came with a big chunk of fur missing on her side, which is now growing back, she stunk (gave her a bath) and today I noticed she's been scratching at her ears, to the point where they are bleeding and scabby :-( she also shakes her head violently if you stroke her head...I like to be prepared for a prognosis before I get one, and also thought it might help anyone else who ever has a similar issue with a new piggy, anyone any ideas? I'm thinking ear mites? Or ear infection? Both?

I am not sure what she may have but please report the owner if you are concerned about the other piggies. They need help.

I feel bad as she obviously loves her animals but she had boars in with sows still at 8 weeks old and was surprised when some of the sows suddenly had litters of their own! Plus one of the gpigs in one of the litters had really scabby rings around its eyes, when I commented on this she just said it had been fighting with the others :-/ her husband said he regularly exchanges 3 baby guinea pigs for carrots and food with their local pet shop :-( they are kept outside in sheds but we weren't taken to see, the 2 litters she was showing us had been brought into their lounge in a carry case. They had a large rabbit in their kitchen which was kept in a small dog crate as well as other bunnies outside apparently. She had countless cats, dogs and 2 stacked bird cages with blankets over. It sounded like there were far too many birds in the cages too. We could see the birds feet and there were loads! It's in the Leeds area, I shouldn't have really bought this little one from her but I couldn't leave her there... The problem is she will suspect me if the RSPCA suddenly turn up so soon after my visit and she has my contact details :-( I don't know what to do :-(

Think of the animals. She is back to back breeding and hoarding. It does not matter if she suspects you as you never need to see her and can always change your number. Those poor animals are in terrible conditions.

I would definitely recommend reporting this to the RSPCA for the animals sake, she may not necessarily suspect you, especially if she has other guinea pigs to sell, other people will have visited her house. It sounds like it could be ear mites, but you can't be 100% sure until you visit the vet. Good luck :)

Definitely report her.

As for your little one, I would say maybe ear mite or and infection but they can also get fungal on their ears. What did the vet say?

Hi Helen and pigpigpiggies, thanks for replying, poor eve has ear mites AND an infection which the vet suspects is deep rooted :-( but we are on treatment and will hopefully start to feel more comfortable soon! As for the woman I will defo be contacting the authorities as the vet said its more than likely the rest will have mites and subsequent associated problems too and will need help.

Oh bless her, good job you got her out of there then. Hope the meds kick in and she is feeling better soon.

Poor piggie, i hope she feels better soon. And i do hope some more animals from her will be given new homes. It is a horrible thought reporting someone but the animals are suffering :(
