Hi, my boar baggins was neutered about 3 months ago. He had a check up everything was fine.

I have 2 boars who have both been neutered. They both had this scab on their backs, I'm guessing It was from the procedure. One boars has completely healed as is fine. But the smaller boar baggins has turned into a a hard blister/scab. And I have noticed another same sort of scab appear underneath the first one. He is fine in personality and is eating everything, and everyday he plays with his sow, and he isn't scratching or itching.

He has a eye problem from a fight he had, and his eye needs cleaning everyday (I've seen a vet.) Not sure whether this could be effecting it by slowing the healing process? And the sow he is with can be feisty but they get on 90 percent of the time. So she could of bit him?

I just want to be sure this isn't anything.

Thank you in advance :)

I hope these can help. There's been no blood from these marks ether. It's really odd.20170128_095245.webp 20170128_095325.webp 20170128_095344.webp

One of my pigs who had mites had scabs like that. He kept scratching and so caused the scabs.

You'll need to go to the vet to get it diagnosed properly and to get the appropriate medication.

Does this mean all 6 of my guinea pig will need treatment?

Very likely. Sometimes the treatment the vet gives will be enough to treat all of them. I quite often have loads leftover when I treat my 3.

Okay thank you I will book them in when I can ☺

Please see your vet as to whether that is mange mites or ringworm (fungal) and treat with proper good quality products once you have got a disagnosis, not the low dosed stuff that you buy in pet shops. all piggies in contact will need treating, and you will need to a full 3-4 rounds course of treatment.

How much does each treatment cost roughly? He has only had one pig share his run and cage. But he is in the same cold room as my other 4 pigs, I'm guess they will all need treatment?

You will have to treat his companion as well; the other only if they have come into contact or shared the same run.
You can order xeno spot-on only much more cheaply once you know whether it is mites or fungal. Your vet may prescribe something that will prevent nasties getting into those wounds your piggy has bitten into skin because of the pain/discomfort. In severe cases of fungal, injected ivermectin is the most effective way, and - as the skin is very sore and touching/scratching can cause fitting in bad/advenced cases - a better way of treating.

Fungal treatment depends on the severity. Oral fungal (itrafungol) is much more efficient, but not cheap and prescription only. Shampoos are somewhat less expensive; enilconazole dip is combining mildness with being effective.

Please see your vet as soon as you can. Mange mites and fungal are both opportunists that can hit very quickly and quite badly when the immune system is not up to speed.

:agr: With the others - you need to get the piggies to see a vet for formal diagnosis and treatment.

Okay. The others haven't shared the run at all. Just in the same room. I will take him and his sow down to the vets when I have the money which won't be till the 6th I know a consultation with the veterinary nurse is free at my vets. Also the vet there is very good. He checked and cleaned the boars eye for no extra cost, when I got him neutered, and I had no problems with the stiches or aftercare. I think my pigs eye might be causing all of this. He has had antibiotics in the past and I clean it for him regularly . They might let me get the treatment and do a direct debit for the 6th. But I'm worried doing the treatment will be pointless without his eye being removed. I will see what the vet says.

Btw I've checked all my other pigs and there's nothing on them like this at all. So I think they are fine. But again I will see what the vet says.

I really don't think this should wait until 6th. If your piggy has an injured eye that also needs treatment. If a piggy has sores in its back like that the ones in the photos then it is suffering and needs treatment as soon as possible. Please do not make him wait longer - please take him to the vet as soon as possible.

Please take the advice given above, your piggies really do need to see a vet ASAP. I agree it does look like mites which can become really serious when untreated.

Did you read my comment? The eye has been treated by the vet. I've been a few times. I literally have 15 quid to my name right now. So like I said I will speak to my vet. If you read my comment again I said I will be speaking to my vet, they do spread the cost and direct debit.

If you want to think, I want my guinea pig suffering then you know where to go.

I'm sorry if anyone's words offended, we are only advising you on the best course of action, but there is no need to be rude.

There is advice then there is telling me I'm letting my pig suffer. I think any owner would be offended if someone said that. The fact I came on here to get advice shows I want what's best for my pet. I don't appreciate being told he is suffering. I don't come from a well off family or background so I can't afford things easily. I do my best for my pets. Hence why I'm here. So don't shoot me for getting advice. I'm doing everything including asking friends and family for funds. I'm doing the best I can. I don't like being told it's not good enough. I've been through alot of stuff with this guinea pig and we have a great bond.

I see nowhere that we are saying you are letting your pig suffer, or that you are not doing enough. We are simply reiterating that vet treatment needs to be done sooner rather than later. We are a friendly forum that prides ourselves on this, so I apologise again if you think you think you have been set upon, but that was definitely not the intention.

I know this is why I will do everything I can to make it monday if I can. I've used the forum before about the same guinea pig it helped me alot. I don't want people thinking I'm going to let this wait till the 6th and leaving him to suffer. Just felt people were having a go not advising me.

I'm sorry for being rude.

I'm sorry if you found my post offensive. That was not my intention. However, you stated that you would take him to the vets on 6th when you had the money.
As has been stated above your piggy needs to see a vet sooner than 6th. When you posted on this thread you were prompted to read the statement at the top of the thread. If you have not already read it please can I ask you to do so. Health and Illness - Important Information
As a forum we have a duty to remind members of the need to seek prompt veterinary treatment when required.
If you are in the U.K. you could contact the PDSA for help or alternatively could you ask your vet for a payments plan.

No one has said that your piggies suffering is intentional but if anything whether animal or human is itching so bad that they are causing this extent of damage to themselves then they are suffering. It's not a dig at you just a fact.

Ideally you need vet treatment immediately though I am aware the problems you face. You say that the vet nurse consultations are free so perhaps asking if they can take and check a skin sample would be a good first step. You might then have a diagnosis and it's just the cost of treatment you somehow need to find. If it's mites I found ivermectin drops off ebay for a very reasonable price and the bottle easily treated all 4 of mine 3 weeks in a row with solution still left over. However it's not worth paying for the drops to find out you aren't dealing with mites.

I agree with all of the advice given so far.
I had 4 guinea pigs living together (same run, same cage, etc) and only exhibited signs of mites (sores on his back, extreme itchiness, etc).
He was diagnosed by a vet, but the vet also said it would be cheaper for me to get the treatment online.
I treated all 4 pigs - Eddi (the one who showed symptoms) had injections at the vet because this was the fastest and most effective treatment, but I used drops that I bought online to treat the other three. My vet was happy with this and it helped t keep the cost down.
