Hi. I was having a cuddle with my piggie Gerald yesterday when I noticed he had 2 scabs on his back and one behind his ear. He has been scratching and nibbling there recently but I thought it was normal. He won't let you touch that area either. There isn't any fur loss but he does have black bits on his back. Ive checked Geraldine but she seems fine. Does this sound like mites?

Could be mites, but could be bite wounds , has Gerald got a cage mate ? Also could be a fungle infection.?

I agree with gizzy, the scabs could be where he has been bitten by another piggy. This quite often the first sign of a breakdown in a piggy relationship. If he's by himself then it could be mites. Best to see a vet for expert advice though x

He does have a mate. Shes a little sow but gerald is the dominant one. I will call the vets tomorrow Hope its not bite wounds, couldn't bear to part with one. Thanks for the advice x

If he is sensitive I think it is most likely mange mites but see what the vet thinks. Treatment would be with Ivermectin, preferably 3 injections at least a week apart. Fungal is also a possibility but the treatment would be different.
