Hello there

I was chatting with my sister in law today and she said it was 'all over the internet' that sawdust was going to be banned for use with small animals. Now I've scoured and searched but I can't find any reference to it. I know it's unsuitable for some pets but is it really going to be banned (and who would do this and how?)

She was also saying that shredded newspaper (with coloured ink too) is the way to go, both for bedding and to go on the bottom of the cages and that this stuff she gets from Animal Dreams also has antiseptic qualities but I've checked their website and there isn't a lot of information about it at all. I've even phoned them and left a message and emailed them for more info but to no avail. I'm really uneasy about it without hard proof so am asking if anyone can help me with any information.

Thanks for reading

Flo

Hi Flo,

I wouldn't use sawdust. It's just that it is very dusty and can cause problems with the breathing. Newspaper is fine. I'm not sure about the animal dreams bedding.

There are lots of alternatives. Fleece, hay and newspaper, megazorb, carefresh to name just a few.

I am allergic to woodshavings they gave me blisters, if they can do that to a human what can they do to pigs?

I also have never used sawdust for my pigs. Apart from affecting their breathing, it can irritate their eyes if it gets in it.

I haven't seen any articles about it being banned but I will watch out for any.

i know on wilkinsons sawdust and woodshavings it has a grid with ticks against which animals it is suitable for. to be honest, i even found sawdust unsuitable for my hamster. it's horrible stuff and should be banned from selling it outright for any animal in my humble opinion

Thanks for your thoughts. I understand and totally agree that some people have their own preferrences and there are some good arguments against it. It was just that my sister in law swore that it was going to be banned! I think she was just being a bit .. er... well you know what I mean!

I still haven't heard back from the company that make the shredded paper, which I find quite disturbing

buy a shredder, and shred any paper you have. just make sure you dont use the sticky bits of envelopes, the clear windows off envelopes or glossy paper. in the long run you'd save £££s!

My mum gave me a shredder and we're having a great time with it. Always amuses me to know the piglets are crapping on the stroppy letters from my bank!
