Hello, we are about to have a huge heat wave here and I’m a little scared about my ac keeping up as it’s just a window unit. I usually keep it set around 68/70 but with the heat wave coming I could see depending on what station you’re looking at 95-106 degree weather. I’m concerned about my piggies and if any one has any insight on chinchillas too that would be helpful and of course I have to go to work so can’t be home all day. I have grainte slabs in their cages already to leave in there. But I was thinking about putting other grainte slabs in the freezer and then putting them in their cages before I leave for work as if they get too warm they can settle on those and switch them out when I get home-should I wrap those in fleece or just put them in there. Is there anything else I can do. I know my ac is usually able to keep up to 20-25 degrees lower than the outside temp in the 90s but I’m worried about the 106. Thank you.

I freeze small plastic bottles filled with water & place them in a sock and then place in the cage. Those thaw slowly and provide a cool area for the piggy to sit near. Some piggies won’t go near but others will lie right up against them

The granite slabs should be cooled in the fridge I think, but don't need to be frozen. I agree about the bottle in sock system, very good. Plenty of water and back up water bottles or bowls. I share your concern about the heat. It is a huge worry for pet owners

Apparently chinchillas benefit from dehumidifiers and do best at 60% or lower humidity. A fan with ice in a bowl in front of it is helpful, but the dehumidifier sounds like a good idea if your humidity is high 🏡

I just ordered some slates from amazon for the same reason!

I tried the frozen water bottle trick with my piggies today and it worked really well.

I made a youtube video about it just today because I know a lot of us worry about these little sensitive creatures and the heat.
