The school I work at has gone and got two female pigglys. I went in and had a look at them, and they are just tooooo cuuuuute. I said are they male or female and she said female. I asked where they were bought from and it was p&h, so I told them the problems with sexing up. And I was asked to double check for them. Thankfully both girls. I'm totally in loooove. I then asked the headmaster what was going to happen to them on the half terms and he said that they will be going home with the students@)not so sure I like the idea of that. But if needs be I shall offer my services. Arnt I just so niiice.:(|)
Hes thinking of getting chickens next. Nice idea for the kiddies to learn how to look after animals I spose. But its just the care in half terms I am concerned about. Not all parents are willing to allow it are they. I will keep you all posted on there wellbeing.x>>

Will the school be providing food, hay etc? I'm not sure of this idea. Would the school only allow children without dogs etc to take them?

guinea pigs isn't too bad as most parents are ok with small animals, my mum remembers always having her school ones in holidays but chickens will be a bigger hassle for anyone

Yep the school will provide them with what they need. The headmasters idea the headmasters problem I feel. If not I shall have my say I'm afraid

I think as long as its discussed with the parents as to what care they require, what to do if illness occurs etc then it should all be fine. At least that way the headmaster should be able to ensure that the people caring for them will be taking care of them

edit - forgot to add that if he's set on getting some chucks there are plenty that need rescuing or ex battery hens would be fab

What happens when the are ill,are the school going to pay for the vets bills, and do they have a vet already in mind. :(

Exactly. I have told them if there are any problems, then they must come to me, and I will give them the best advice I can. Ark at me thinking I know it all.

hi, i dont like the idea of having school owned pigs. Very stressful for them. Hopefully they aren't pregnant as so many pigs from pets at home are. What i think would be a great idea for you is to put together a booklet for the parents to read when they look after the pigs at the weekend. Basic care instructions, food, vet info, signs of illness. If you would like any leaflets to read through pm me your email address and I'll send some over to help you out x

Thankyou. Apparently they have printed out some knowledge. I was told by one of the nursery staff when i ran back in after my dinners to tell them veggies are a must. I dont want to overtake something that isnt anything to do with me. But they know where I am if they want to know anything.

Give the school a chance! I know you're only concerned about the guineas but the decision won't have been made lightly.

I had guinea pigs in my Reception class for a year and before I got them we had to do a full risk assessment and find out how to look after them, write policies and jump through all sorts of hoops. We had to have arrangements in place for weekends and holidays etc.
