Scratch On Eye

Just discovered a deep scratch on surface of my guinea pig's eye. She is in some discomfort and keeps closing her eye (but she can also open it). Can't get her into the vet until Monday morning :-( Has anyone any experience of this? Worried for her vision.
 
Wow that is really nasty! Personally I wouldn't leave it until Monday, does your vet not open on Saturday mornings? If not I would ring around to find one that does. She will need antibiotic eye drops at the very least & the vet will put some drops in her eye that will check for any damage. A small dose of pain relief would be needed too :)
 
I think you should get her to a vet before Monday - even if it is not your regular vet. I have been to a pets @ home vet at the weekend.
 
My vet practice only has a nurse in tomorrow. I will ring around in the morning...we have two Pets at Home nearby. Don't know how it's happened...looks too bad for for a hay scratch, one of her sisters may have scratched her but they don't usually fight :-(
 
Better to get it seen promptly as these things can worsen quickly :) It could get infected & antibiotics work better if used early on :)

The vets at P@H are called vets 4 pets. - in case you want to Google ...
 
Thanks for advice. I phoned Pets@Home and they booked me in tomorrow but advised going to out of hours service through my own vet...which I did in the end earlier this evening...luckily the eye isn't perforated, have antibiotic drops and she had a pain-killer injection (which she really didn't like!). A costly business but peace of mind that she is ok and pain free. She is happily munching hay now (vet thinks the scratch was caused by hay...she does like to burrow in it). It's been a long night!
 
Awww bless her! Well done for getting it seen promptly whatever the cost, I am sure she will feel more comfortable over the weekend & she has the best chance possible of no lasting damage x

Well done . She really needed to be seen straight away - so , I'm glad you did this .

I'm also delighted the P@H vets advised you to contact your out of hours vet .

Good that you have had her seen; that looks like a nasty scratch that was already starting to ulcerate - and not something you would like to leave without making sure that it hadn't perforated the cornea. The quicker you can treat, the easier the infection should come down. Sometimes just a misjudged swipe with a back foot from another sow can hit the eye. these things happen unfortunately!
