my guinea pig has a clear scratch on his eyeball I’ve just noticed it when he’s been in direct sunlight, it doesn’t look to be bothering him and his eye looks normal and clear. Should I be worried? I think it’s from his hay. But no sign of infection in his eye and no discomfort for him , couldn’t get a picture because it was really hard with it being a clear scratch. Here’s a picture of the eye it’s in though

Eyes can look OK but can also deteriorate quickly. It is always worth a vet visit. The vet will put a special dye into the eye that shows up any scratches or ulcerations. Imagine what it would feel like if you had a scratch on your eye. It would hurt. A visit to the vet is in order me thinks.

I've never left mine after hay poke or even suspected hay poke. Velvet had hay poke and I thought I had gently removed all the hay from her eye. I took her to the vet anyway and it turned out that she had a seed head caught on the inner eyelid that the vet needed some forceps and a VERY steady hand to remove. It had started to grow into her eyelid.:yikes:

I've had several pigs with hay scratches on their eyes and they have always been red and inflamed. If he looks like that, get him into the vet as soon as you can.
Since it only appears in the sunlight, it could just be the way the glare reflects from the eye. If you're still worried a vet visit can't hurt.

Yeah , his eye isn’t at all red and he isn’t struggling to shut it or open it, I think I’m gonna wait it out and see because surely if there was still hay in there he would be showing signs of discomfort or his eye would be cloudy, red? But it’s completely normal and looks the same as his other eye , like I said if it gets worse or any symptoms do occur I’ll take him straight to the vet

I would definitely get a vet to check. Corneal ulcers are not visible to the naked eye and are picked up after the introduction of a fluorescent drop and the use of UV light. Any eye injury has the capacity to deteriorate very quickly so I wouldn’t delay getting the vet to check the eye for you. Good luck.

I’ve just spent about 5 minutes with a light looking into both eyes and I now can’t find the scratch? Maybe I’m going crazy lol

Was it possibly a hair? I can't tell you how many times ive freaked out over a scratch just to wipe the eye and see it was a hair..especially with my long haired ones!

I’m not sure lol I’m going to take him back into direct sunlight and see if I can see it again

It must of been a hair guys because I can’t find the scratch at all sorry to bother you all lol

Much better for him if it was a hair than a scratch. Could it have been a trick of the light perhaps.?
