My Guinea pigs have been indoors for about a month to help get on top of mites.

They have now gone back into their hutch on snowflake supreme Woodshavings.

I’m starting to wonder if the Woodshavings are causing one of my girls to be itchy as she’s started scratching a lot since going back in to the hutch . I’ve only had her since July so unsure if it’s a mixture of mites and skin reaction to the Woodshavings?

Has anyone else had this problem with Woodshavings ? And is there any other alternatives such as Aubiose that may help?

It’s possible she may be sensitive to it

There are other disposable options:
Abiouse
Megazorb
Snowflake softchip

I have tried them all and all work well. (I use soft chip now).

Alternatively, put down puppy pads and the cover them with hay;
or newspaper with hay on top (newspaper isn’t brilliant as it just goes soggy but it may be ok as a temporary to get her off the wood shavings by what of testing if it is the shavings)

My mum did suggest this ethos bedding which is apparently similar to Aubiose but i have read it is sharper than Aubiose and I’m put off using it.

Would you say Aubiose is sharp ?

And do you know if soft chip is a different type of wood than the supreme shavings which could be bothering her?

I don’t know anything about the ethos bedding but I’ve just looked it up and I think it would be fine. Just make sure you get the plain one, not scented.

Aubiose isn’t sharp.

Most wood based beddings are made from the same thing. But softchip is chips rather than flakes. I find it much less dusty and stays put more than shavings.
it would have to be trial and error but assuming it is something in the the wood shavings then it stands to reason softchip could do the same

When I adopted Lovely Lexi 🌈 and her friend The One and Only Thea, I was told by their previous owner not to put them on wood shavings as Lexi was allergic to them and that they'd had to move to fleece because she had lost most of her fur. The only bit of fur that hadn't grown back was on her nose. So it could be that your girl is allergic. Here is Lovely Lexi.
