Scratching Piggies?!?!?!

Hi,
I have 2 pigs that are just over 2 years old. They are both scratching (occasionally, not constantly) and one has black 'flakes'. There are no sores on their skin. Earlier, we thought one was going to bite the other but they started to groom each other. Do I need to take them to the vets?

I would take them for an official diagnosis. It could be mange mites in which case they black specks may be skin debris as the mites are under the skin. It could also be hay mites though which you would be able to see.
 
I can't see any mites on their skin. Mange mites sound horrid. Is it easily sorted? Don't like the idea of my little piggies being poorly.
 
Yes treatment is with Ivermectin, preferably by a course of 3 injections at the vets (about 10 days apart). The vet may suggest Spot on but injections are more effective.

I have only even taken them to the vets once (for their first nail cut to get my 'lesson') and I used the vet at Pets at Home where we bought them. Are all vets 'equal' when it comes to treating piggies?

No sadly they aren't, there are some vets who are much more knowledgeable. Have a look on our recommended vets locator.
