One of my male keep scratching? I have tried to check him over but with no luck he gets very angry, chatters his teeth and turn arounds as if to nip me! I carnt see anything from my quick looks and his behaviour besides scratching is fine eg; he's friendly, eats well ect any suggestions? Thanks...

He sounds as though he has mites. These live under the skin so you wouldn't be able to see them only maybe the sore areas from scratching, dry scabs or flaky skin.

My boy's are on treatment for mites at the moment, the need treatment in order for them to go, so my vet tells me!, and is a simple course of treatment.

Mine are on a spray but alot of more experienced members recommend an injection to which I think they have to have 2 or 3 of.

Also it would be advisable to get the other piggles sharing with him treated too...

. Thanks for replying, how long does the spray course last? My boys don't share a cage as one started getting a bit dominant at 5mths there both 9mths now. Is it advisable to still treat the other piggie too?

Please have your piggy checked by a vet for a proper diagnosis if you are not sure or experienced enough to know exactly what you are treating!

Mites are not visible to the eye, but they can kill if not treated correctly with ivermectin, either by injection, orally or topical. In this country, we do not use sprays. You always need to treat all guinea pigs living together. Any course needs to be repeated at least twice or three times at regular intervals to catch all the eggs that are hatching in skin and are causing the itch and the pain.
