Now Dandylions brave enough to be out and about in her cage I've noticed that she scratches a lot. Far more than Acorah does. Everytime I look over she's just scratched, is scratching or is about to scratch. Granted I don't look over at them much, but it's still odd. I'm thinking about maybe putting some skin cream on her (made for guinae pigs).

Are you sure she hasn't got mites, dry skin or anything like that? :)

Rather than skin cream, try a spot on treatment for mites. Beaphar do some, and I think pets at home stock it. It's called something like anti-parasite spot on. It contains ivermectin which is what is used to treat mites. If Dandylion is scratching a lot and it is mites, treat Acorah as well because she'll have it too. The treatment won't hurt them if they don't have mites but it will work as a preventative.

My sister has some parasite thing. Ok I'll go bug her to lend me some -grabs her bottle of pop as a bribe-

Thanks

We used the spot on treatment just in case when we got a new piggy and they have been fine on it and last for about 4 weeks. We got ours from p@h but I have seen it in other pet shops as well.

My sisters giving them both a bath with insecticidey things which should sooth dry skin and exterminate anything. Thanks for the advice.

If it's mites a bath won't get rid of them. The mites live under their skin and cause irritation that way. The only way to treat mites is using ivermectin. The only thing an insecticidal shampoo will get rid of is lice, if they have lice you will be able to see them on the base of the hair shafts or crawling on the skin. Please make sure that the shampoo is guinea pig safe. Dog or cat shampoo is not good for guineas although I think some kitten shampoo is ok.

Do you think I'm stupid? Of course it's guinae pig shampoo and the bottle says mites.

That remark is a bit harsh Jayms_fallen_angel, people are only trying to make sure you use the correct products on your piggies so that they get better. The wrong products can do far more harm than good.

And what kind of idiot do they think I am that I would use dog shampoo on pigs? That's insulting and I will use whatever tone I like, if you don't like it no ones forcing you to come to my topics are they?

Guys this is getting a bit out of hand. No one implied anyone was being an idiot and if you post about a piggy being itchy on a forum in the way you did, you are asking for people to comment and offer advice. That's all anyone did! Be nice people.

gus and jack was only making sure, I'm sure people WOULD actually use dog shampoo on guinea pigs, assuming it would be okay, I know people have done before. What brand of shampoo did you use?

I THINK EVERYBODY SHOULD JUST caaaalm down :) This way everybody talks nicely and nobody will fall out ^_^

I don't think dog shampoo would be ok for a guinea pig as dog shampoo is formulated for a dog, like guinea pig shampoo is formulated for guinea pigs and cats, rats etc etc :) just to let you know :D

I know it's not suitable, I meant some people would assume it is okay. I use Gorgeous Guinea shampoo on my piggies and it's great :)

Right here's what I think, you've washed her in guinea pigs mites shampoo which should help get rid of the mites :) As people have suggested theres the spot on from Pets at home which treats mites which won't harm them even if they haven't got mites. If she continues to scratch take her to the vet :) Don't forget to treat your other guinea too just in cage *thumbs up* Good luck! Hope she stops scratching

Firstly it's not mites as there is no hair loss and what would make a moron think i would use dog shampoo have I even said that I own a dog to use dog products on my piggies? NO. I don't have dog products and I wouldn't buy a product for any other animal than what it says on the tub Now out of my face I didn't ask for you to talk to me like an idiot and I actually didn't ask for speculation. In fact I didn't ask you for anything.

Hair loss doesn't have to happen straight away, but it can occur, and somebody would be silly to use dog shampoo, we're not accusing you of that.
Jayms look this is going to sound a little arsey but I don't mean it in a arsey way, to stop all this arguements make posts sound a little better like with words such as 'moron' 'idiot', because people take things differently, maybe use a smiley too like ;D:D:) to make posts sound better, because people interpret things in many ways :) just looking out for you hun cause the last thing you want is to get banned because everybody needs advice on pigs PLUS this forums great to talk on :D

Ali loves piggies is absolutely right about the hair loss. If you catch mites early enough you very rarely get to this stage. She is also right about tempering your language, this is a friendly forum, all people are trying to do is give you some friendly advice and support. If you don't want it, don't post!

I like to look out for people thats all, I would do the same for everybody else in any case :):):):)

Well I find you extremely rude! If you dont want advice or peoples opinions I suggest you refrain from posting! There was no need for that tone, I did not call you an idiot or insinuate in any way that you were stupid. I was only making sure you knew the facts which is what you asked for in the first place. Mites do not show as hair loss initially, pink skin and scratching are the first signs. Mites lie dormant in the skin of the pig any form of stress can trigger them. Stress could include introducing a new cage mate or just moving home from a rescue/petshop to their forever home, or even moving from being with mum to the petshop in the case of very young pigs. Pet shops will not treat for mites so it stands to reason that pet shop pigs very often do have mites. Also shampoo even if it says mites on it will not get rid of mites if it does not contain ivermectin. If you do not wish to listen to any advice from people on this forum then I suggest you do your own research. May I point you in the direction of Guinea lynx website, it has some of the best medical information for guinea pigs on the net. The address is http://www.guinealynx.com/

I think we should all forget about the 'rude' comments, and just stick to advice, and we should also leave out inappropriate language, anybody, i know only one person has used it but you know what I mean (I sound like a 30year old mum!) LMFAO! :p

If you all love your piggies and any animal no more rising to posts! O0

i agree with Ali ;)

I think you should just forget about this and we should get this back onto the original topic and how we can help!
