Junior Guinea Pig
My guinea pig is 7 years old and has a sebaceous cyst (sebaceous gland cyst). The veterinarian manually expressed a thick white paste-like substance from the cyst a few days ago. The vet instructed me to flush the cyst, but later advised that I could stop flushing for the weekend and simply observe the area until the next visit. Currently, a small amount of white, toothpaste-like material is still collecting inside the opening. Sometimes a bit of serous fluid mixed with a little blood comes out, but the wound itself looks pink and the guinea pig’s behavior is completely normal, she is eating, drinking, and active. There is no foul smell, no yellow or green pus, and no signs of swelling, heat, or pain around the cyst. I have been cleaning only the outside of the opening with saline or boiled water, without squeezing or flushing. Today I was on a visit for the third time, and veterinarian wants me to come every three days for this kind of cleaning, and he said that it will be necessary for as long as the guinea pig lives. Can you give me any advice? Besides the cost of the visits, it is a lot of stress for the guinea pig, and I also have limited time because of work – I can’t keep going so often. Surgical removal is not an option due to the guinea pig’s age and condition.
