I am new here or to any forum. I have two guineas, have had three total, and I think I am pretty knowledgable about them. Bit I am looking for any advice I could get. My oldest boy, Gus, had a growth on his back. It didn't seem to give him any problems. Eats normal, active, etc. We'll I thought it was an abcess, I cleaned the cage tonight and inspected them like usual. It started to bust. I squeezed it, and he didn't mind. No wheeking or squirming. I think it was a cyst. Not an abcess. Vet thick white paste came out and the swelling went down. I put a little prid's salve on it and will clean it tomorrow also. Anyone experience this? Curious if it was cyst or abcess?

hi there, l have a sow with a siulare syst on her back, it has been there for as long as l can
remember, my vet said he could remove it tough his advice was to leave well enough allown as it is hamless ,
l squeeze small amounts of puss out evey few days, it hasent got any worse so l am
leaving well enough alown as vet surgested
she also has a syst inside her ear,

l can get small amounts of puss out if l squeeze, but as it gets nether bigger or smaller l am leaving that alone and
simpely monetering it .

l will try and post some pics

Thank you! I was told the same also, just to leave it alone. It never seemed to bug him, but when I saw it looked like it started to burst, I had to try to squeeze it out. Glad I did. Makes me feel better. I don't think he realized he had it. First I thought it was an abcess, but after seeing what came out, I think it was just a cyst. I wish I would have taken pics! Should I try to clean it with any saline or antiseptic? The salve I put on him is an icthammoyl ointment meant to "draw" out boils. After I squeezed most out, I put a dab more on the popped open area, hoping tomorrow I can get more out. Thanks for answering!

if l remember corectly l have a pic in my camera of the puss that came out of this pigs cyst on the
back, the amount was astounding , will post it soon :vom:

Can anyone recommend what I should use to clean the cyst, since it has started to drain? I have heard conflicting things about peoxide & neosporin. Have also heard to use iodine diluted to flush. Was told cysts are not dangerous and no need to surgically remove, just curious what to use to keep it clean.

when ches had his sebaceous cyst, the vet said to leave it and if it burst, don't panic (knows me too well! haha), then contact them and take him in to have it cleaned initially, and then i assume they would have provided extra to clean at home perhaps. i'm sure he said hibiscrub for cleaning but he would have said what ratio to dilute it etc. perhaps get your piggy-savvy vet to take a look to make sure it is definitely what you think and take it from there? :)

Did it smell terrible when it was opened? If not, my guess would be cysts. Abscesses are infections and generally smell awful! I've dealt with more abscesses than cysts, but typically clean any open wound with sterile saline, or else a sterile flush that I get from the vet.

Ok thanks for the replies! Much appreciated! When it did bust, I applied light pressure, since he didn't seem to mind. It didn't smell awful. It was very thick white cheesy paste like, sorry... a little odor bit nothing awful. I used a little saline on it, I will take him to my normal vet, uses for my dog. Never have had any problems to take the piggies in. Thanks again!
