Okay so I’ve never experienced anything like this before. I heard some commotion in the cage (kicking against the ceramic bowls and a pig making a slight noise), looked over and Little was laying on his side, legs flailing quickly, after a few seconds he got up and ran into one of the hideys. I’ve never experienced a guinea pig to just fall over and struggle to get back up. I’m thinking it was a seizure, but I don’t know. He hasn’t been acting quite himself lately, he’s been more reserved and exhibiting lots of dominance behaviour. He’s recently developed a cataract in one eye so I’ve been putting it all down to that and him just trying to adjust. I don’t know if this is relevant to a seizure or not, but I just thought I’d mention it.
Does this seem like a seizure? I honestly can’t imagine him just falling over like that but because it was quite frantic in that his legs were flailing quickly and then as soon as he got up he ran, i didn’t know if that was quite seizure like as there was no slowness or hesitation in his movements. I know with humans, the after effects are slow and so it can take a while to come round after the fitting stops, but not sure about guinea pigs. I’m worried sick so any advice would be so helpful.

It rather sounds to me that he fell on his back and was trying to get up again. Piggies struggle to right themselves when flat on their back; they have to wiggle around quite a bit.

If this happens repeatedly or if Little is looking decidedly off in the coming hours/day, please see a vet.

Thank goodness, and thank you for your fast reply, it really worried me. I’ve never seen a pig fall before, I’m not sure how he managed that! I’ll get him straight to the vet if I see anything else. Thank you again

Hope Little is ok x My Ted did this once, it’s when they fall over onto their back, they rigwelt like sheep

He’s doing good, thanks. It was so scary, I’ve never seen a pig fall on their own before so my first thought was the worst explanation. He must’ve done it when he was scratching an itch or something, he seemed quite alarmed after with him running to go hide but I got him straight out for a cuddle and he was happy enough with that as cuddles are his favourite thing in life!

Hope you and Ted are doing well, all things considered x

I was 'love'ing the beautiful photo, not what happened to Little ...

Perhaps he had been at the strong stuff -

Haha, that must be it. I’d say he won’t be hurrying for more, but since it got him some well-deserved cuddles I wouldn’t put my money on it 🤣

Aw look at him, he is a little Poppet x
We are all doing ok thanks, Ted is going to be neutered next month by Simon Maddock in Northampton after he has his dental. Then we are on the count down for a little lady friend 😆 Not sure if he’ll know what to make of a sow, but I think he might be rather chuffed!

I hope it all goes well for him. Wow, I’m sure he’ll love that, I bet he’ll be desperate for some company by then too. I feel like when you’re busy preparing for a new addition, it can soften the grief you feel. Part of my grief came from seeing Little alone before we got Peanut, they were bonded after only three days of Honey passing away so it wasn’t long to wait but once we’d made the call to Cavy Corner and got the ball rolling, I felt a lot better. What warmed my heart was that both Little and Peanut had recently lost a friend and so they took to each other straight away, and were sleeping beside one another within the first hour of bonding. They clearly needed each other, and seeing them be happy together really just helped me.

This photo was taken the day we got Peanut. I think it says it all really, Peanut is clearly wary of his new environment but Little is there right beside him making sure he’s okay and just glad to have the company. It’s devastating to lose one, but another pig needs you and Ted, too and so it makes the pain and loss more bearable.
I have everything crossed that Ted bonds with a sow quickly and smoothly, so that he can live happily ever after :)

Aw thanks so much, I just wish it could happen sooner. I would have been happy to bond him with a boar but there’s no boar dating anywhere near, the nearest being Bristol. He will be neutered on the 9th March then ready on 20th of April, such a long time away! We are away up to Yorkshire for Easter, but as soon as we get back we are going to find him a little lady to live side by side with. He seems ok, still eating and everything, just wish it could be sooner for him
Your photo is so sweet of Peanut and Little x
