Have you ever wondered how to select the best hay for your guinea pigs. Well look no further all your answers are here. information is also gathered from variose other websites I will underline these part.I'm not copyrighting just compiling all information.
- Yes you have to do a visual check on hay however don't relay on this. There may be a very pretty bale yet it may also be poor in quality there are many different reasons for the quality variations don't assume that the bale is supposed to be like that . A green colour usually means that the hay contains a high level of protein and vitamins but that same bale of hay could also be high in nitrates and low in digestibility. Hay that is a beige colour is usually sun-bleached but could also be hay that was rained on prior to baling. Rain can leach nutrients from hay and decrease its quality. Dark brown hay (tobacco coloured) is usually a sign that the hay has been heat damaged after being baled too moist or rained upon after baling. Hay quality is seriously affected in hay that has been heat damaged and mould may be present.
- One of my favourite smells is the sweet smell of hay nothing can beat it well not for me. Yeah that's right get your nose in the hay and give it a good check make sure it doesn't smell musty, dusty or mouldy
- The hay stems are shorted and thinner they are soft and easy to bend
- the bale should be light and easy to lift this indicated no mould rocks are inside
