My youngest wasn’t her usual chirpy self today but I sent her in anyway. I picked her up around midday and when we tested (LFT) she was positive! We’ve both had the PCR and just waiting for the results.

The triple blow is that I had been invited for an interview on Monday morning 😭 and I also got a parking fine!

Anyway, I must try and see the positives. Trying not to beat myself up too much but failing miserably. Hopefully only one bubble will have to close.

I need to distract myself.

Mine being negative is fine as it means ‘my class’ doesn’t have to isolate. But if she’s positive we’ll all have to isolate. If she does have it I hope she doesn’t get any worse.

Hopefully not. When I had Covid I couldn’t stop being sick but my husband had hardly any symptoms apart from a cough and loss of taste and smell. I have everything crossed for you

So sorry what a miserable day you have had, fingers crossed it comes back negative x

Thank you all. She’s fallen asleep on our bed. She was feeling a bit warm and complaining of pain in her side so given her paracetamol. Doesn’t look good. We’ll just wait and see.

I'm sorry to read this, fingers crossed for negative results. We've been told today not to lft on primary children and go straight for pcr. Some of the info is not clear ☹️ hope your daughter feels better soon x

Oh bless you. All crossed that you're negative and that your daughter is on the mend very soon. Take care.

Thank you all. I’ve got a bit of a sore throat but more worried about her. She’s not been this ill since she had chickenpox. She’s just been very subdued today.

@Spaghetti & Noodles i didn’t know you were meant to go straight to PCR. I did tonsils as well though for the PCR I only did her nostrils.

I think it’s likely she does have it. Which makes me wonder where she got it from. Hopefully not me.

The info we had sent to parents today says that, I'm not sure where it came from but presumably health/education people.

Or newsletter said this:
As a reminder, Lateral Flow Device (LFD) testing
is not advised for primary-aged children.
If your child is identified as a close contact with a
confirmed case of Covid you should seek a PCR
test for them. PHE are advising that primary-
aged pupils should only be tested if they are
symptomatic. In this event, their families should
follow the guidance for households with possible
or confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) infection
and book a PCR test for the child.
If you have any concerns that your child may be
displaying symptoms that could indicate Covid
and are in any doubt about how to proceed,
please call 119 for advice.

I am quite fed up of doing LFT as are my children but they are not made to wear masks on the bus, not wearing masks in class but some communal areas they are? You either wear them or you don't.

The concept of risk assessing before an intervention is well established. In classrooms the kids are sitting, they are advised to sit facing the front so there is no face to face contact. It’s different to spaces where they are coming and going, or on a bus that isn’t policed, turning round and hanging over the back of the seat etc.

I lost my cool with the school when they made my son wear a mask during his first mock exam on the basis it was a communal area. Exam spaced desks facing the front is not a communal area. The mask instruction was withdrawn. Madness.

@Spaghetti & Noodles my son hasn’t brought home test kits in a while now. I may just get some from a pharmacy next time I can go out. They don’t wear masks in school anymore but do wear them on the bus. Well I tell my son to anyway. We still have to wear them in communal areas - anywhere outside the classroom.

@Tigermoth the children come up to me. I’ve recently been telling them to give me some space as they do sometimes crown around me!

I have no objection to them wearing masks, although like you I wouldn't expect them to wear them in an exam situation. I just wish they would make a decision and stick to it, we were all quite happy wearing masks on the bus and around school, no one has said they no longer have to but I if no one else is it's difficult to make mine be different. I guess at least we are still testing so well very quickly be aware of any possible illness.
I work in a rec/year 1 class so they have tried so hard to keep spaces but they just can't really do it, of I am working 1:1 with a child I wear my mask, if I'm close to a group I'll wear my mask but if I'm at the front of class which is 2 meters away I might take it off for a short period but I wear mine more than I don't wear of of that makes sense.

The problem is our prime minister announced on TV that kids dont have to wear masks in school anymore. You then cant make them wear a mask when our own government tells them they dont have to.

Public health for my area has now strongly recommended the use of face masks again in school. (Still not compulsory though so the kids wont wear them).

I'm not shocked that the age group with the highest number of cases of COVID are from secondary schools. Given that there is no mask wearing or social distancing for us for several hours a day. All we have is kids in set seating plans so we can track and trace a positive case, they have lunch in year group bubbles and each year enters school at a different time or using a different exit.

Kids aren't vaccinated and school staff havent been prioritised for vaccines so I don't understand why the rules are so lax in school where a comparatively extremely high proportion of ppl are not vaccinated.

We've had so many positive cases in the last 2 weeks. Some of my classes of 30 kids are down to only 7 as the rest are isolating.

I'm sick of the rules being different in schools compared to everywhere else.

Because this is something we have to live with. Children with no health issues don’t fill hospitals if they get COVID. Potentially they take it home but their family should be vaccinated. The vaccination breaks the link between illness and admission. All school staff have had the opportunity to be vaccinated with an increasing number getting their second. All those vulnerable by medical needs and age should be long done.

Apart from anything else, when teachers can go and sit in a pub and watch the football and leap about and hug, I expect my kid to be able to sit and work without a mask. The teacher in the pub puts on their mask to go to the loo and move around, putting on a mask in the corridor is the same for the kids so I have no objection to that.

The rules around kids isolating need looking at too, there rightly has been an abundance of caution but it needs looking at in the context of risk with the vaccines as their education is being destroyed. We need to protect health but we also need to look after their future.

Eldest daughter had a bit of a temp before and is crying because of a headache. Given paracetamol earlier and topped up with ibuprofen. I’ll book a test for her tomorrow. Not looking good ☹️

Oh no, sorry to hear your daughter isn't well. Regardless of whether it's covid or not it's such a worry to see them unwell, I hope she starts to improve soon. I've had two notifications from nursery this week about confirmed positive tests in children that attend there. Luckily on both occasions the child hadn't attended during their infectious phase but it's still a worry to see

Oh no, I hope they are both feeling better soon. What a worry.

Thank you all. You’re right @Lady Kelly its a worry that they’re ill, regardless of whether it’s COVID or not. The eldest daughter rarely gets ill (like her dad!) so when she does it is worrying. We’re a little worried about my son catching COVID. He can have quite bad asthma. We shall see.

Still no results from our test yesterday. They said usually 24 hours 😞

Sorry to hear this... i hope your children aren't too poorly - horrible when they are ill.. all the best xx

So interestingly a lady who goes to my yoga class works for a charity that works with asthmatics. Apparently asthmatics aren't any more likely to get severely ill from covid than the general public. It's unusual in that asthmatics are normally more likely to suffer badly from respiratory illnesses but with covid it attaches to receptors on cells that are generally not present in asthmatics. So the receptors that usually make them more susceptible to illness actually protects them from the worst symptoms of covid

Ooh, very interesting! I’ll tell my husband because we were worried about him catching it.

So results finally came back this morning. I’m negative but my daughter is positive. I’m debating whether to get the eldest girl tested in case she doesn’t have to stay an extra day at home. Probably will today.

Good news about you, sad news about your youngest daughter though. I'd have your eldest tested so you know exactly what you're dealing with.
