maybe i'm a complete kill joy, but it really gets me angry when people bring unwants to my pigggie sanctuary because they weren't "pretty enough, wrong colours, injury" etc to sell, it angers me when i'm told " i breed them to see what colours result, but i couldnt get shot of these with the pink eyes, strange colour". i never turn a piggie away, but word seems to have got around that you can dump your 'discards' on sue. at least they are passing them to me but it is so irresponsible. grrrr!

ha its a flipping annoying thing isn't it. I saw someone trying to home several males through gumtree and emailed him a list of local rescues etc and he asked me if he should sell them at Melton market, I put him off and he found 4 homes... 1 male left and couldn't home him anywhere, the only rescue anywhere remotely near by refused to take him because he's white fur with pink eyes... so he asked me if I could help.

Now Buddy is with me, I do plan on rehoming him but don't know how at present poor little boy. I think he's gorgeous too and has a lovely temperament and it saddens me that people thought he was too ugly to take him home

I don't encourage breeding at all, but atleast if you are going to be daft enough to do it have back up accomodation for all potential babies and be prepared for the eventuality that you might have to keep them all if homes can't be found. Otherwise have a second thought for the people who constantly take care of animals after someone has 'messed up' or 'let the breeding get out of hand' and don't do it. It's not that hard, males and females should be separated unless neutered.

I don't think any guinea pig should be ruled as 'not pretty enough'. My Mum really dislikes red eyes on them but I had a super duper himmie a few years back and although my Mum didn't find him particularly attractive his personality was to die for and everyone just loved him. I got him from a pet shop (not P@H!) I used to visit, I don't tend to buy pet shop piggies but he'd been there months and I did at the time feel sorry for him, but obviously other people didn't know what they were missing out on. He learnt to give kisses on command and everything. Miss him a lot!

:0 after reading these this is how i feel, i tell people how it is and that they are stupid to get in the situation of 'unwants' but as least they bring them to me, i've heard real horror stories of 'alternatives' its disgusting !

Am I missing something? A RESCUE turns away a pig because of what it looks like? Isn't that going against the whole ethos of rescuing?

WTH? Its like saying to a foster home, "I'm not taking this child because he's ugly!"

I think it's the people handing them TO the rescue because of how they look.

It's not very nice, though...
All Guinea Pigs are beautiful. How can people be so darn cruel?

That is awful. How can people be so cruel. Talk about shallow. They do not deserve to have any animals with that attitude.

I don't see what the problem is with piggies that have red/pink eyes. I have never viewed them any differently than dark eyed piggies, but I don't have a vanity problem when it comes to pets. They all mean the world to me no matter what they look like.

out of interest, what is wrong with pink eyed ones? Luigi is red eyed and a few of the babies are. I think they look cute!
