I don't know if you have talked about this before in this forum but I was at p@h today and got very annoyed. I just can't understand why pet shops are still allowed to sell animals. I bought my guinea from there about 2 months ago and really wished I hadn't after hearing about the pigs who don't have a home.

I only use a pet shop to buy supplies i.e. hay but everyone I go into I get so upset seeing the animals. I would much prefer to shop in a shop that didn't sell animals but I can't seem to find one. While I was in p@h I saw a family buying a guinea pig and they did exactly what I did; bought only one pig and a cage that was too small. I really wanted to say something but didn't have the guts and they were with the staff all the time. Hopefully they will take really good care of the little thing but all I can see that pet shops who sell animals do is facilitate people who decide one day I want a guinea pig (guilty!) and can buy one. If it hadn't been so easy for me I would have done my reasearch and not spent a fortune on absolute rubbish and given a needy animal a home.

Sorry for ranting but today really irritated me!

There are lots of pet supply shops on the internet. You can get things at reasonable prices. Try your yellow pages as well if you want a walk in shop- there are lots that are smaller and don't have animals, depending on where you live.

I was in P@H today and saw the exact same thing with a rabbit, I too wanted to give the customer all my advice but couldn't. I even said to my daughter that I could never work in a pet shop, as I would give lectures before allowing people to buy their animals, Why can't they point out that they should be paired up. She also sexed the 8 week old rabbit as a male, and I know that it is hard to tell for sure till they are about 14 weeks,
I wish there was a law against selling animals in pet shops.

I know what you mean, I was in pets at home the other day getting some shampoo for my dog, and I thought I would look around and see if there was anything nice for my piggies, and there were 3 children stood over the guinea pig hutch (the oldest child been about 6 and the youngest been about 2), and they pulled a poor little brown pig out of its hidey hole, and were like passing it around and scaring the little thing, as it wasn't been held properly, then when they had finished they just dropped it back into the cage from about 3ft of the floor, the poor little pig.

I did end up going up to the children and telling them they shouldn't pick up pets, I then went and told the parents (who were at the other end of the store at the time and came over when there little girl ran off) that they should look after their children better (like keeping an eye on them) and I then proceeded to tell the staff they should actually do their job as there was supposed to be someone stood by the cages at all time.

I really wanted to the pig home with me and give it a lovely home, but I unfortunately don't have enough space to home it, and I don't think my parents would be impressed.

If you know what you're looking for it's pretty easy to tell the difference between 8 week olds. ;)

I'm glad you told them! So often people are scared telling kids off but if their parents don't care how will they learn. I'm surprised that they were able to actually pick up the animal as our p@h the barrier is really tall and you can barely even see the little dears.

As for your comment baby-wilson about where we could get them from I wondered that myself before I wrote the post. I think there are so many rescue pigs around already (+ there will always be breeders) to make sure commited pet owners are able to give a pig a home. What it would stop is people just going out one day and deciding lets get an animal and then realising in a couple of weeks they are too much work and get bored. At least rescues vet people first.

If people actually had to make enquiries about an animal and find out about them beforehand it would hopefully get rid of the people who have short attention spans!
