Hi all, long time no speak .

Bit of an odd question really, but is it possible/likely for a piggy to go a bit senile?

Dumpling / brown pig (my avatar and I've attached a picture for cuteness sake...) must be coming up 6 or so years old and recently seems a little senile. She's always been demanding (read: greedy ) but recently just seems to forget things. As in, I'll be feeding everyone (or doing hay) and if you do hers first, by the time you're at the 3rd cage she's chewing the bars thinking she's been forgotten :hmm:. If you then rustle the pile of hay in her cage she gets all excited and thinks you've just fed her...

She also has critical care that I put in her cage in a bowl twice a day but she doesn't know it's there until you tap the bowl (she'll have a little then wander off and forgets it's there until you tap again..)

She's also started wandering in her cage towards her nuggets or her bed then just stopping in the middle of the cage as if she doesn't know where she was going.

I'm not sure if I'm just crediting her too much intelligence in the first place () or if that sounds like she might be going a bit senile to anyone else?

Thanks guys :D

(I should add that she's not a particularly well pig at the best of times - she was completely bald (except her head) for a year following suspected hormone imbalance and she's always had UTI issues. She is however my beautiful baby  haha)

It sounds a bit like she has got attention/short-term memory problems. It is rarer in guinea pigs than in humans.

You may need to top her up with water and syringe feed if necessary.

Thanks Wiebke, to be fair - she's never been the brightest of pigs so that may just have developed with age, bless her !

I'll definitely keep an eye on food and water intake, I dilute the critical care to liquid as she ignores it otherwise so I think she's probably getting enough water but will keep an eye to make sure :)

Thanks again!

We were at the vets with Dumpling today for a foot problem and the vet noticed while giving her a look over that she has cataracts so it might just be that he can't see where she's going / can't find what she's looking for! Poor babs.

Vet also felt a large ovarian or kidney lump which he said probably isn't a cyst as its too hard :(.

Poor Dumplepie :(
